Hi, I am 18 years old and have an initial assessment with a training provider tomorrow, I am very nervous because it is based on English and maths and if I fail I won’t have an opportunity to have an interview with my chosen company so I have to pass, has any of the older electricians or even those who have done an initial assessment have anything to say about it?

It’s a little late to revise basic maths if your test is tomorrow

Don't fret about it, the training provider is responsible for ensuring you are trained sufficiently to pass any assessment they set, if this is not the case then it indicates you have been inadequately trained by them and the curriculum is not sufficiently robust enough, so the onus is on them as well as you.

Thanks for the advice, it’s just that we have to answer 60 questions in 1 hour. I got at it 3:00pm good luck to myself

Only real advise is, if you get stuck on a question move on to the next question and come back to that one at the end, make a note of the one you skipped so you can get back to it without endlessly searching. Good Luck.

Good luck let us know how you get on.

I did it, I’m not sure if it went bad they said they’ll tell me my results in a few days, but I got to have a look at my overall results it was in percentages and I don’t think I did well I got 50-55% out of 100% which is half the exam but, not sure if it’s enough, I hope I did well. They said if I don’t pass I’ll be invited in to discuss alternative options.

At any meeting to discuss alternative options keep in mind it was their responsibility to ensure you where trained sufficiently to pass the assessment, call me a cynic if you wish, but it sounds like a ploy to get you to sign up to another course.

Who are these assessments for their own internal use or an outside C&G assessment centre?

Who is this training provider?

So basically, I signed up for an apprenticeship with a company and they gave me these conditions I need to meet, in order for my application to be successful, so they sent me to one their training providers who train their apprentices they told me I need to pass the training providers initial assessment in order to get an interview with them (the company) they gave me two of their training providers I went to one them yesterday and the initial assessment was fairly simple but the part i struggled in the most was the maths to be fair given the fact that I’m not good at maths.

Ah so it's a pre-condition to get on an Apprenticeship, in that case you can only do the best you can, keep going and good luck.

Go to night school for an Adult maths course and show the company that is what you are doing to rectify your known short comings, can only help.

How is this going mate? Just curious.

What did you not reach? Was it something they instructed you in during your course?

I am always dubious about these training providers, it's in their interest to prolong your attendance.

The pass mark was 75%, for electrical since it’s a technical trade and I got a mark of 57% so they said I have to resit the assessment. The assessment was out of 60

I have to retake the initial assessment, didn’t meet the mark for it.
That's unfortunate but chin up you will pass it next time.im my day you simply did an aptitude test of various math questions,English and general knowledge, just things you learned at school. It was very very easy then your name was put out to potential employers .I passed say on the Monday and got a phone call the following week for an an interview and that was me.its getting harder now to get apprenticeships with mid size companies with 10 employees say due to the rise in sole traders .I really feel for someone wanting to get into the trade now.i was lucky I got a varied apprenticeship, domestic, commercial and industrial. Spent my first year mostly making off lengths of micc ,the good old days .I distrust large national companies im not sure they would have your development at heart and there knowing to get shot of you when there super stadium build is complete .where are you based

Thanks for the support, and yeah I feel good about my resit hopefully I’ll pass it, yeah you are right it’s hard to get an apprenticeship nowadays, companies don’t want to take anyone on. Even if you have little experience it’s challenging where im based which is Bristol.

Yeh it's the way the trades going ,to many one man bands who financially are unable to take on an apprentice or don't trust them with making mistakes which all apprentices do ,journey men as well for that fact
