Whats the point of a punch when you have to drill anyway?????
- Cleaner hole edge
- Less swarf flying around
- Sometime you have an existing hole too big for a hole saw you need to extend
- Can be used in some cases where you have insufficient access for a big enough drill for a hole saw (for larger sizes really).

For general installation work not much really
For making an existing hole bigger, especially when you need it to be off-centre to the existing hole they are good.
Also they give a more accurately sized hole of you are mounting connectors, buttons, indicators etc into something.
