i run an NICEIC firm. i went to a house the other week to quote for some work in a house that some people had moved in to recently. i noticed that the fuseboard was new and an NICEIC registered sparks had done the work and some other wiring in the house. there were stickers on the board.

Anyway we got the job and started the work only to find that there was no CPC on the lighting circuits (even though the previous sparks had earth loop readings for the circuits). the ring circuits were not continuous even though there were end to end results for the ring circuits, and worse of all the new lighting circuit had metal accesories fitted and the light switches were not earthed. the CPC was just loose in the back of the box with an extra long length of sleving on it.

two of us spent till 11am tring to ascertain whether we could do any of the work that we had priced for but alas we could do anything.

i informed the client that she had recourse through the NICEIC as the electrician who had carried out the work was registered.

she called the NICEIC and they said the following:

1. she was not the person that ordered the work
2. the work was carried out over three years before

on this basis the NICEIC would not investigate.

Now since when does an electrical installation suddenly become safe after 3 years? and if this is the policy of the NICEIC why do completion certificates last for ten years and not three?

it seems to me that the NICEIC have completely lost their way. it is an utter money grabbing con.

Menawhile the sparks who did this work is still registered and still doing crap work like this.

im nic reg have been for years, i only stay with em as its better the devil you know!

law to themselves ,always harping on about freezing membership fees ,why not try reducing them for long standing members?
once told them about a firm falsey advertising as nic they said I had to get photographic evidence, walking joke shop the whole outfit!

so wheres the insuranced backed gaurantte ? just like patting themselves on the back saying how good we r.
all changed when they changed from a non profit making charity and split to form ESC, then they just saw £ signs CHERCHING!

My cousin had just moved into a house with a large housing association, who had contractors doing the three day rewires on their stock.

I arrived to put in a point in the utility area and was surprised to find a catalogue of horrors. I asked to see the paperwork and he had it all. The initial PIR warranting the rewire and the EIC on completion, all was absolute rubbish and was not even signed off by a QS. All NIC paperwork.

I contacted the housing association directly to have the door slammed in my face, so I went to their head office instead.

Their attitude towards it resulted in me reporting them directly to the NICEIC, I initially got positive response from them, claiming the contractor was not registered and so fraudulently using their name.

That's where it ended.

It's 4 years later and the work has still not been rectified and my cousin has had no communications from the housing association from it.

I have to rub shoulders with these NIC people on regular occasions now and I always tell them that their not doing the job they claim to do so well.

As has been said many times and on many threads here and on other electrical forums, All these organisations are treating the electrical industry, and more so the fully qualified, experienced electricians as lucrative cash cows!!

You would in all likelihood have got the same type of answer and level of interest even if this was a just completed job. That includes the LABC, Housing Association, NICEIC (or any of the other part pee scammers) No-ones interested in the slightest until someone get's hurt or worse, ....Then all these organistaions will be running round like headless chickens covering, or trying to cover there arses. They used to call it, ...Company damage limitation, ...eg, blame every other bugger!! lol!!!

Back to the op and looking thru my rose tinted spectacles, who is to say after the initial contractor had been that DIY joe had not done some 'alterations' himself, admittedly if the cpc was missing on the lighting circuit, fairplay. But over the three years anything could have happened. It does worry me sometimes that if i were to do some work and later the owner did some himself badly, when the next electrician came it would be assumed to be my work, how do you cover yourself in instances like that?

You should threaten the niceic about going to the press to expose these cowboys that the niceic are backing I'll bet they'd soon kick these cowboys out

Just goes to show all they want is your yearly subscriptions

I will repeat what I have said time and time again any Schemie will not evict or investigat a member as striking him off means the loose a subscription and remember wear your Schemie badge with pride as they pick your pockets.

Just to it will take a death for them to act thank goodness they are not lurking on the forum:tongue::tongue:

Photos, all work you do, record and photo it, any odd stuff that worries you and customer will not have rectified, photo it.

Thats all we can do.

I am so bloody glad I am in Commercial and Industrial and not with one of those £500 thieves!

The consultation was a farce. Building regs state that we shouldn't sign off anyone else's work, yet the new recommendations will be to advise DIY'ers to get their notifiable work tested by an electrician???
