Hi all

I discussed a similar situation in a previous thread but the topic keeps popping up with testing jobs that I seem to be attracting at the moment.I got offered a job carrying out EICR's for the MOD and the rate of pay was by the property?? In other words, if I don't knock out 4 or 5 a day, I don't make any money. Travelling time in a shared company van is not paid. Is this how the testing indusrty is going?

Right then,

The contract is to carry out EICR's on 2 to 3 bedroom houses and flats. The contractor has specified that he expects us to deliver 4 a day. If we have time to any extra then that would be welcomed as he and the MOD contractors expect the works to be completed in a few months. The length of the contract is unkown, just get all lived in properties and voids done as soon as possible. All C1's will be made safe at the time and C2's and C3's will be sub contracted. We are being paid 30 quid a property with no travelling time included. The paperwork will be half completed on an ipad and the office will do the rest. Will there be a permanent job with the company at the end of the contract? Nobody knows for sure as a carrot is being dangled for us to prove our worth. The QS is about 22 years old and looked very nervous on the induction day.
Apparently, we would be constantly audited by technical officers to make sure we are working to BS7671?? The contractor is a member of the NICEIC and ECA and has some big commercial clients that myself and the poor lads hired for this contract will probably never work on.

£30.00 per property, 4 per day - I can think of easier ways to earn that sort of money!

EDIT: I wonder what the NICEIC Engineer will make of this?

**** that, £30 a property and 4 a day! Along with correction all c1s, with no extra time. No way on earth would they be done properly. Also, it depends how thoroughly they want the EICRs done and what limitations you're allowed; and how close the properties are.

£120 a day for working at record breaking speed? By the time HMRC have taken their cut you'll almost be paying them for the privilege of working for them!

.....The contractor has specified that he expects us to deliver 4 a day.....

I bet he does, he's transferred all the risk for any later problems to you as you're signing the paperwork?

IMHO there is just no way you can do a professional and thorough job of doing 4 in a day .......... unless the extent and limitations & operational limitations are such that you aren't doing any inspecting and testing!

Perhaps it was just dawning on the poor lad, that the company had stamped ''MUG'' on his forehead!!

How a 22 year old can realistically be the company QS, responsible for god knows how many electricians (or even worse, wannabe DI's) work is beyond me. But it tells magnitudes about the company and it's working ethics....
