shutter door retractive switch

Hi guys, got a bit of an issue at work trying to install akey switch for a shutter door. The door is operating on a retractive switch with two lives and a neutral. When pressing either up or down, both lives are activated. My question is, how does the switch tell the door which direction to go in?
