Guys,

Is there enough work in London domestic / commercially in london to go it alone or are sparks being under cut by newbies? How are the one man bands doing? An accountant reckons it's not great time but I'm believe it's better out there any ideas guys?

You're not being under cut by Newbies as such, your being under cut by those that shouldn't even be in the electrical industry, let alone be allowed to work alone to self design/install and finally self certify!!

Surely then your clearing up their mess. Personally I've had enough of sitting behind a desk with no where to go so think I'll take my chances. I use to think work for a big company and climb the greasy pole but I can tell you unless your willing to lick a lot of --- you're going nowhere even if you have enough experience and qualified up to the eyes balls.

Failing that I'll become a Gigolo lol

You would be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire , theres a lot of people like yourself thinking the same thing, getting robbed by these short course schemes and brainwashed into loads of work and money , when in reality its not true , and then find out the hard way that , you need experience so I wouldn't if I were you ..

Everyone has got to start somewhere, so if you really feel that is the right thing for you and you are going to be capable and competent without the help of others, then go for it, but if you shell out a load of money, then after a couple of weeks actually realise that you are totally out your depth then it will have been a big mistake, a BIG mistake!

Well , I don't know about lick --- or whatever , one thing I do know you would be kissing your backside goodbye of some hard cash if you went on some short course scheme..:banghead:

Sorry your missing my point I am a qualified electrician I have been for over 10 years out of my time but I decided to go a management route after being on sites and domestic work. What I was asking is what is it like now can you still earn a bit of dough?

It it takes time to build a business if your gonna give it up after two weeks then you might as well never started. My point is people are still doing it so can you still earn?

I get your drift now , sorry , I have been employed on the books and agency by one company for the past 3 years nearly, although I still have my own limited company, previously I had found it quite good in the London area doing my own work but it takes time to find your own customers , I have to say though that I feel more secure in these times being employed it may be better next year , thats my opinion and in your case it may be worth getting set up with registration with a scheme etc and any other Quals required whilst your still employed , just for a bit of security in the mean time...

To answer your question, is there money to earn I say yes there is plenty of it out there but only if you are really good at what you do.
There are a lot of chancers and Electrical Trainee's out there and even though they do get a lot of work , they also mess it up as quickly, leaving it for the experienced guys to put right.
I don't do domestic and don't want to, but if you are Good at your craft then you will succeed.

Ray,

Thanks for your comments I was self employed years ago and have all the tickets and affiliated to a scheme now it's always been a part time thing for me whilst working full time I need to keep my hand in as I didn't want to be one of those managers that doesn't keep up with my sparks.

Oh dear, with that little outburst I don't think it is me who needs nappies, and I wish I had seen your reply before I bothered to try and offer you my advice.
And one last thing, if this is how you reply to a bit of fun, then I can't see you lasting very long working for yourself, I get a feeling your customer services may be lacking somewhat!!

Thats good you have kept you hand in , I would grow that side of things until your confident enough to make the move , my customers in the London area dried up and most of my work was for A DNO as a subbie so I suppose I put all my eggs in one basket (my mistake) , get you're name around a bit and grow it is the best thing I can suggest really ,, Best of Luck..

Ray I don't think you will get a reply, he just got banned

Why so?

Boydy

See my post 12, which was meant in jest, he then replied calling me some very naughty names, told me what he thought of me, what he would like to do to me and generally lost the plot.
