Maestro Companion Dimmer

Hi, my wife and I need to replace a single switch dimmer that is not LED compatible. Our local hardware store told her that the Maestro Companion dimmer would work fine in a single switch installation, and sold it to her even after she pointed out that the box says it can’t be used alone. They were insistent that it would work fine. But I can’t find any information online saying this is safe, commonly done, etc. I also can’t find any explanation for why it won’t work if I do. It looks to me like I could just hook up the ground wire to the ground, and the power wires to the black and brass screws. Is this an obviously bad idea?

I guess I’m a little confused, if your looking for a good dimmer switch use Lutron name brand. If you don’t want a dimmer then any regular switch will work, just tape up the neutral.

I don't know what it says on the box, but in the instructions it says the Maestro Accessory Dimmer MSC-AD cannot be used on its own, but that's not the one you have!
The installation instructions show how to wire the MA-R as a single dimmer here:

So as far as I can see you are OK to use it
