trev,

Unlike other multifunction testers where you can generally choose which test lead plugs into which meter socket METREL meters have a single 4-way plug which forces l-l, n-n and cpc-cpc connection between the meter and the test lead. In addition, for continuity testing it only uses the Line and Neutral leads. Therefore, when using a 3-Pin plug test lead the only continuity tests that can be carried are across Line and Neutral - in effect an R1 + Rn test. The ony way to do an R1 + R2 test without removing a 13A socket faceplate is as I stated by using a kewcheck R2 3-pin plug and using the standard probe-end plugs to connect test lead Line - kewcheck R2 Line and test lead Neutral - kewcheck R2 CPC.

ben,

I ... my wife ... bought the MI3002 for me before Christmas and at the moment I am unhappy with slow response from METREL to my queries. It is a good job that I don't yet have to earn an income using the tester! I am chasing them again tomorrow. Their shorter than normal working hours don't help with making contact. I cannot get their EuroLink ProPlus software for EICRs and the like to work properly at the moment!

what issues are you having with the software?

Nonsense. I have a Metrel MFT mate, what you're supposed to do is plug the green lead into the blue lead and put your probes on the end of that and the black lead. This enables continuity readings to be taken on L N and CPC. Do you honestly think that Metrel are going to make a meter that requires you to buy something made by another manufacturer for their kit to work properly? They'd be throwing money away wouldn't they

Are you sure about this, my Eurotest uses L + CPC to do continuity.

Have you downloaded the "full user guide" as the silly little one in the box is useless!

IIRC you have to combine the CPC and Neutral together when using the MI3000 for continuity.
Exactly the same way as you do with every Metrel MFT I've ever seen.

Just in case the OP missed it I'll ask again. What were your end to end readings?

I know it's an old fashioned way of doing things, but if you take the front off of the socket you don't need to faff about with doo-dahs to plug in, swapping leads, nulling add ons etc. Doing it that way has the added advantage of being able to check the condition of the cable ends and connections, as well as eliminating any spurious readings due to poor connections between the socket and plug.

Very good points but likely to be ignored by the corner cutting users these days.

Just had a look at some ads for the MI3000 and I can see what Ben means. Yes the Kewtech R2 Socket Adaptor will do what you want spot on, you just swop your N and CPC leads around.
