Hello All!

What are the rules and regulations on replacing a consumer unit? I'm looking to replace a consumer unit on one of my property's?

The reason I'm looking to replace the consumer unit is because its old and outdated, I'm confident about getting the job done and correctly, but just want to know the rules and regulations before doing so.

The property in question is the one I currently live in.
Does one need to be qualified to do this without breaking the law?

This is a notifiable job to Building Control so either its done by a Part P registered electrician or you notify building control and pay their fee and get it checked by them once its done!

Do you have any competence with electrics? Do you own a MFT? Are you a member of a scheme? Have you informed LABC about your plans? as they fall under Part P of the building regs!

loads of threads on CU changes and part p. do a search on the forum and then decide which way to go. i trust you have all the test equipment and the knowledge to use it, and can complete an installation certificate. failure to do this could void your insurance on the property.

Four options for you

A) Get a spark who is a member of a part P scheme and get them to notify LABC for you
B) Get a spark who isn't a member of a part P scheme and notify LABC yourself paying their fees
C) Do it yourself, buy the BGB to understand what you need to know and again notify LABC yourself and pay their fees
D) Go ahead and get it done without notifying LABC anyway, but be prepared for any consequences that may occur if you get found out..
