So about 2 months ago now i rang a company up, who offered to get me first page on google for £300 + VAT, so i paid them the money and then thats it.. Im not on google they do answer calls but they just keep saying you will be on at the end of the week.. Then nothing so i ring again.. Sorry were having issues were hoping end of this week.. Then ring again like i said were having issues end of this week should be.. and goes on and on like this..

Have i been officially conned?

What can i do now? Can i tell them to give me my money back and if they say no.. What then? Can i go to the police? - THey sent an invoice and everything.. Absolute SEO | Professional Search Engine Optimisation

Thats the website i used.. I spoke to a mate of mine who does SEO.. He said that he charges £400 for a website and £200 / MONTH to get me top 3 on google.. is that the going rate?

Also finally do you get alot of work through google? I Know i got 35 quid for free on add words, used that an then got a re-wire from it.. But that was all (Although it paid for the £35 lol).. \

Cheers

yes you've been conned
only 1 company can get you on the front page of google and thats google.
is it worth paying marketing firms to get you more exposure ?
dunno , maybe if it gets you 1 or 2 high value jobs a year.
but the domestic electrical market is utterly swamped , only low prices get you work these days

Sounds like you have had your eye wiped. Let it be a valuable lesson, and you can kiss your 300 quid goodbye un-less you used a credit card?!

Best to stick with the big names like Y##L etc!

There are other cheaper ways to get a SEO page, search on google. I'm in the process of opening a page with one&one.

Umm.. DAMN but surely they cant get away with it? Surely i can go to the police? Or a lawyer or something? It seems abit wrong if you ask me..

Basically saying i could make a site saying i offer SEO for £300 get people to pay me then just not do anything.. This is basically stealing surely there is something i can do :(

Yes there is ..... just make a site saying I offer SEO for £300 get people to pay you then just not do anything.

If you can't beat 'em .... join 'em !!!!

Axel, you're wasting your time with the police and your money with a lawyer. It's highly unlikely that these people will have put anything in writing making you any promises and without that you just have to suck it up as a hard, expensive lesson learnt

Got to agree with the others, you've been had.
Did you check out their company address on Google maps...
I wouldn't have touched them with a barge pole on seeing that.
The internet is basically free, use it and do your research!

Lmao geordie love it! Theres so much of this out there i had no idea of it!!

Ima email police or a lawyer and see what they say :p

I wouldn't bother even thinking about trying to involve the police, I've been wary of them ever since Liddle Towers died after being "interviewed" by Gateshead plod.

Strange and funny coincidences. As I pressed the post button on that last comment our landline rang, there was a a nice asian sounding lady on the other end who regretted to inform me that the security of our computer network had been compromised and we were under serious danger from cyber criminals who could exploit this security breach. She then very kindly offered to repair all this horrible damage for £45, payable by debit or credit card, wasn't that nice of her?
She's currently "on hold" while I try to find it, I keep going back every now and then to ask if she's still there hehe

Edit

Awwww she's given up at about 9 minutes. I hope she calls back

They'll be based in some hot smelly country, not a hope of getting your money back.

Awww man well i shall find them.. And i shall DESTROY THEM..!! :'( i could have done with the 230 quid they conned me out of proper guttered :/

Remember we live in the age of the middle man plus you need to get cynical ie if its to good to be true it is google makes money out of sponsored links so its in their interest not to help the who puts a good site together

I'm glad to see yer larnin' bonny lad .... but the mystery to me is how a lad from Huddersfield managed to part with his brass so easily !!! :eek:mg_smile:

Haha mate it wasnt easy for them.. There calls + emails started in June and i parted with cash in September so took them 3 months for me to part with the cash ha!

Soo any advisse on SEO, how can i go about getting a website and getting it onto google cos surely thats the way to earn the cash! People google Electrician Huddersfield ohhh Unicorn Electrical at top.. Ill send them a email! Whats best way?

I hear YELL do a pay per keyword option is this good?

Cheers

I simply don't believe in SEO - its a waste of money. Most people who find me via a search engine do so because they are looking for a VERY local trades person.

Personally I would suggest that you spend the money advertising elsewhere, If you think about it, if it were as easy as paying a company to sort it and you're at the top, then everyone would be at it. Of the companies which do pay they are only on page one, not at the top. Someone else pays another company then yours gets edged out. Then another edges them out, then you move up a couple etc etc and on it goes.

search "electrician durham"

i rank in google business 3rd from top
i rank in free index 3rd from bottom

i also bring up durham registered traders scheme half way down, click that and it links to a search of the council datatbase of approved and registered companies!!

never paid for SEO YET!!!

"Hello axel132132",

IF You paid for this with a Credit Card You can try and claim back the Money from your Card Provider under: Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974.

This applies if you use a Credit Card for `Goods or Services` and you do NOT receive what you paid for or the Goods or Services are `Faulty`.

In a case where You can PROVE this your Credit Card Provider is `Jointly Responsible` to ensure that you do receive exactly what you paid for - If not they are liable to Refund your Money / Deduct the Payment from your Credit Card Account.

There are MANY websites that have the details about `Section 7 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974` - but here is a Link to one of them:

Section 75 refunds: Free protection for ALL spending...

IF You did pay with a Credit Card [?] - I hope that this will be helpful to You - unfortunately this aspect of `Consumer Protection` does NOT apply to Debit Cards.

Regards,

Chris

I'm on first page second sparky, not paid anyone a bean.
SEO at basic level is done by the web site designer when the pages are being built.
Otherwise its google ads and all that malarky.
Few other tricks but nothing mysterious or costly.
Its all on Google funnily enough and its very very simple, how an industry got born out of it does make me wonder.

It depends on competition really. Durham would be easy while London would be hard to achieve. no one can guarantee first page listing on google. quite often you spend the coin for you to be put on google adwords to get on first page.

Cornish small man.
