Just reading about a consumer unit change and PIR. I am replacing a consumer unit and indoing so having to move it into a garage where SEC are moving the meter too. All the circuits are having to be extended by junction boxes and then in trunking to the new position. An electrical installation certificate is only required, yes?

The customer in his day was a diy electrician and wired the garage, its a can of worms with wood working machines, green house, garage sockets all coming off junction boxes etc, i have informed him that this really need to be rewired, would you re connect this or not connect until re wired, have no idea what the test results will be? Do i have to go and see the green house etc for testing? Can limitations be written down on certificate?

What are the PIR labels i hear being talked of to be applied to the CU change?

Any advice?

If they are moving the meter, shouldn't they be running the tails to the CU,or does the customer want it all moved

The tails from the meter are the customers responsibility.
Everything up to the meter is the DNO's.

So if the DNO move the meter will they leave the customer without a supply.I know in new builds they pull the cables in and the spark does the rest.

Yep im afraid so.

Thats why on the paperwork the customer gets it says that an electrician will need to be present to reconnect the supply.

The tails are not a problem, i will be there when they fit the new meter, it was more questions about the testing of the existing interesting garage and outside electrics and reconnecting this up?

It sounds like it could be a problem and you should use your judgement as the whether YOU would be happy to connect it back up.

We havent seen the install so its hard for us to give a definitive answer.

If you think it looks dodgy, then it probably is.

Maybe a quick word with the client explaining your concerns would be the first port of call.:)

Wouldn't it be in your interest to PIR the CU where it is now before the meter is moved and see what problems you find and then if there is nothing major, extend the cables to where the meter is being resited ready for connection.

The new consumer unit has to go in so i dont see the point of doing a full set of tests just to re do once the new board is connected? We are doing the kitchen with 2 new circuits going back to the new CU so a new board has to go in. The board has to move as a Cloakroom is going where the old board is.
