I have a hitachi hss chuck even though I can't praise the drill enough I've had issues with the chuck and I replaced it with a supposedly heavy duty ( wasn't cheap !) but turnd out to be crap sticking closed all time and bit constantly dropping out , just wondering for the opinion of others before I but another ?

Not sure on the manufacturers side but make sure that the chuck is suitable for the drill use, i.e. impact drill or percussion drill as they are differently designed to take account of the stresses, the lock function once the bit is clamped are also useful for preventing release.
