Hi Everyone,

I've already learned a lot from this forum so decided to join to be able to participate in discussions and help fill in the blanks I'm expecting to have along the way.

Just so you know a little about me, I've had a couple of careers (ex Army, MoD, now project planning) and only gained my Electrical (City & Guilds) qualifications last year, i.e. Part P, 17th Edition 2382, PAT 2377, and Inspection and Test 2394 & 2395; I'm also registered with Elecsa for domestic installations

I accept that that my route of learning is widely disparaged by the apprentice/NVQ qualified out there, so whilst I continue working hard to develop my knowledge any expert help or guidance you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Nick

if you've managed to obtain 2394/5 it shows that you have something about you. now it's the practical side. not just the electrics, but understanding construction methods and how to overcome the problems of getting cables fron A to B without destroying the property. good luck with it. :D:D

Hi telectrix, thank you very much
It's the cable routing I'm working on trying to work through at the moment, using my 1960's ex-council semi as a working model, which is posing more questions than answers lol o_O

Welcome Nick owen .
(any floors concreted over ? )

in most house it's a case of landing and bedroom floorboards up. fish along the run of the joists and drill the though routes.2"" down min. then chas down to sockets and switches. a good idea would be to try and get some temporary work with a local spars on labourers rate. get some experience.

Hi static zap, thank you.

Only the ground floor is concrete I believe, but the lounge etc is off limits for now until the wife is ready to decorate haha.
I've been trying to trace the cables back from our side extension to work out how the guy got the cable from the elec underfloor heating (complete waste of money IMO) to the CU, as the extension is set back from the front of the house. It looks like he tracked through the cavity wall but baffled at the moment as to how he did it; I may have to suck it up and call him to ask how he did it lol

Thanks teletrix, the labouring option has been on my mind for a while now and I've even considered asking local firms for unpaid work experience, but just haven't been able to take the time of work to do it yet as I'm a contractor
