So, a single phase motor I have bought. I have wired it up, as the diagram shows on the motor, and it's tripping the RCD when I turn it on. I have tried it wired up for forward and reverse and trips the RCD on both. I removed the lead that goes from the wall plug socket to the motor and tried that lead with a hair dryer - doesn't trip the RCD. So it must be the motor that is the issue.

I bought it from a guy who said it had been in a container for years - it looked unused since it still had the plastic cap on the shaft.

Here are pics of the motor, the way I wired it etc.

I would insulation test the windings and capacitor
If you don’t have the equipment to do that, put it in a warm dry place for a week with the cover off.

I would replace the capacitor if it has been standing for years, they can dry out and fail with a bang!

I opened up the motor and the windings in the stator were black, has to be burnt out for some reason.
