So, a single phase motor I have bought. I have wired it up, as the diagram shows on the motor, and it's tripping the RCD when I turn it on. I have tried it wired up for forward and reverse and trips the RCD on both. I removed the lead that goes from the wall plug socket to the motor and tried that lead with a hair dryer - doesn't trip the RCD. So it must be the motor that is the issue.
I bought it from a guy who said it had been in a container for years - it looked unused since it still had the plastic cap on the shaft.
