Hi
i have down loaded approved document p 2006 i believe this is the latest version upon looking through the book it seems confusing when comparing with the red book !! this is what is stated

document p 2006 reg 4 (2)

in accordance with regulation 4.(2) the whole of the existing installation does not need to be up graded to current standards but only to the extent necessary for the new work to meet current standards eexcept where up grading is required by the energy efficency requirements of the building regulations

question !!!

so if extending a ring final or supplying out side power only the new extension needs apply ( reguires rcd protection)

?????????????????????

In a word 'yes'.

Regulation 131.8 requires that the existing must be capable of handling any additional load, and that earthing & bonding must be adequate. It does not say the existing needs to be brought up to latest standards.
