Hi there,
I just thought I would introduce myself and say hi, tell you a bit about me etc.
I am currently going through a career change, or trying to at least, after being made redundant from my IT job I decided to take the opportunity to retrain to become an electrician. It is something I considered doing years ago but since I was comfortable enough at the time I didn't bother, now of course I have been given a real incentive to go for it. So like many over 25s I looked into my options, not really knowing anything about the industry and opted to take one of these short courses, the type that promises to make you an electrician in record time etc. Well of course I have since come to realise that this really isn't even close to the mark. I haven't finished the course yet, I still have 2 more practical workshops and some class room time to go yet, what I have done so far is pass my C&G 2382 17th Edition exam and the 2377 PAT testing one (what relevance this really has to being an electrician I don't know now, the company was trying to pad the amount of C&G's they could offer out with this I reckon) and an introductory electrical course 'Essential Electrics' that was called. I have also done some of the stuff I need towards the theory side of 2392 believe it or not, which was actually the selling point of the course I chose, well it was 2391 at the time, but it was essentially sold on the basis that this is what you 'really' want, well yes ...but there is a heck of a lot of other stuff I now realise should come first really. But it is what it is so I am doing the best I can with it.
I came here to learn more and to see if I could find anyone in my area who would be willing to offer me the chance to get some practical experience, which is of course the fatal flaw of the route I have chosen to go, a huge lack of it. But I have to make it work now, after sinking a considerable sum of money into this and still being unemployed. I have really enjoyed the practical workshops I have done so far, it's really quite interesting to me. However I really want to do more, I really want to get out there with an experienced person and learn as much as I can. This however is proving to be a huge difficulty so far.
