Hi guys, can anyone give any advice to the following;

I'm looking at starting an hnc/d to follow on to hopefully a degree. Can anyone give an insight as to which route is best to take ?

I'm a electrician up to 2396 electrical design. I'd like to follow on from the design route, but unsure wether to go with Building Services electrical engineering, electrical/electronic engineering (electronic hasn't really any interest for me) or I've heard a lot of people talk about mechanical engineering..

If you've completed any of these subjects above and have any experience or advise, please let me know.

Also does anyone know of anywhere in the south of England (Brighton) that undertake these courses part time ?

Many thanks in advance

I did, but far too many years ago now to be of any real use to you... lol!!

It is the HND (with distinctions) that can be equivalent to the foundation 1st year of a degree course....

If you have no real interest in electronic engineering, then go down the Building Services route it'll give you a basic all round course...

If and when you achieve your degree, and after gaining suitable work/skill experience at that level, apply for C Eng, but not with ITE, ...with CIBSE!!! ...You'll never regret going with CIBSE, they are a far more professional institute than the rehashed compartmentalised ITE all round!!

:stupid:

not done either , but i'd take the higher diploma in building services any day.

it will be less theory / academically biased with more practical applications and will encompass modern building principles without the months of maths you'll end up doing on a hnc/d.
but thats just my own preference.

be warned though that both cost over £4000 for 2 years part time at my local college , so not cheap.

If you're not interested in electronics, don't go there, it gets seriously heavy duty!!!

Building Services & CIBSE definitely, if it is basically BS7671 related electrical & other building services you are interested in following a career in.

I'm signed up to HNC buildings Environment starts in August with Fife College, costs £1200 per year but getting support on that so can't complain. It's the most natural progression from an electrical bias into generalist building services.

Once your on the HND your looking at site supervisor level and once completed you can start at foundation as a quantity surveyor. All handy qualifications with the right company to back you up.
