Hello all.....Im Bobby ..I have been working most of my life doing domestic work and was wandering if you industrial electricians could offer me a little advice ..I have recently started working in a more industrail setting which is largely fine Its just from time to time I can get a little bit unsure for example I have been connecting up 3 phase isolators for ac units/condensers etc my understanding is that you would as a rule always connect ur supply cables to L1,L2,L3 however I was discussing this with a coleauge and he seems to think that you would connect to T1/T2/T3 .. would this be the same for contactors? anyone that could offer some advice It would greatly appreciated thanks
 
the L's are supply and the T's are load.
 
L1, L2, L3 i would generally expect to be line ccts as in supply.

Had one the other day which was R,S,T for supply and U, V, W for load side. Was an old inverter.

Often see U,V,W for motors nowadays

Thing is i absolutely make no assumptions and follow the drawing if i am wiring and labeling and use the manufacturers data sheets if i am fault finding.
 
To me:

L1 = LINE 1

L2 = LINE 2

L3= LINE 3

T1= TRANSFORMER 1

T2= TRANSFORMER 2

T3= TRANSFORMER 3

As I was trained in Electrical and Electronics before I went into bashing and denting other types of work...

Some Electrical Engineers that are on here will also see :


T1 = Tap 1

T2 = Tap 2

T3 = Tap 3 (of a Transformer secondary winding on the output reduced Voltage side)

L1 L2 AND L3 are always used by myself for marking/tagging/labeling my 3 phase supply inputs and cable break outs/boot off's...

The U V W that Plug and Sparks mentioned is on a lot of German hardware....



so yes stick to L1 L2 L3
 
obviously on the Electronics side of things,incase anybody smart pipes in...

L1 = INDUCTOR 1

L2 = INDUCTOR 2

L3 = INDUCTOR 3

That's just because I know some smarty will be itching to pipe in tuppence worth...
 
Got me thinking.... also seen L1,L2,L3, 4,5,6 etc becoming suffix A after the contactor and suffix B after the local isolater, e.g. L10,L11,L12 on supply side of contactor becoming L10A, L11A, L12A on load side then changing to L10B, L11B, L12B on load side of local isolater.
