Hi Guys & Gals,

Just a quick question for you all, nowt too challenging.

A few years ago I used to work for a company just doing I & T all day every day. Up until I started with them I used a "Metrel Easi test" mft. Now,for what ever reason, they wanted me to use ther "Megger 1552" mft. It wasnt a problem, I soon got use to it. Anyway, one day I was getting some odd readings whilst doing the continuity test. I tested the same circuit 2/3 times as the readings didnt make sense to me but each time I measured, the readings were way different. So not knowing the "Megger" intermatley yet, I phoned my boss. "Check the voltage on it, if its below 9v you need to change the batteries". So I checked and indeed he was right, the votage was showing 8.7v ish. So I changed the batteries and it was all good again.

So now when I turn it on, I always check the voltage and if its near the 9v, I change them straight away. So, at what voltage do you change your tester batteries? Is it just Megger that need there batteries changing at 9v? I seem to be changing them after only using the tester, say on 4/5 I & T's.

So thats it! I said it wasnt a challenging question. lol

my 1552 is heavy on batteries as well. i change them when it reads below 10V.

Have you ever used duracell rechargeable tel? It might work out cheaper but im not sure how long they will last! My lad uses them in his xbox controller and theyt seem to last ages.

tried rechargeables, they seem ok , but megger say don't use them because of the high short circuit current.

Good job i didnt buy anymore then, they cost a fortune. Someone should invent a "wind up mft" like the torch's and radio's you can get. lol. Just have to get your apprentice to spend an hour in the mornng winding it up. lol.

the best are the ultimate Lithium, but they cost!

The last few times Ive bought them, they have been duracell ultra. I got em from Wickes, they were on offer, buy 5 get 5 free. So for 10 batteries cost me about £4. Unfortunatley, at the minute, business is a bit slow, so Im not using the tester that much.

Until recently B7Q did packs of 19 Duracell AA for £6.98. Glad I grabbed a few. The 1552 really munches through batteries, the only real downfall I can find about it.

Hmmm, wind-up meggers.... That sounds like a really new and novel idea....

Windy up Megger ace bit of kit BUT getting a steady reading was a bit of a no go
As for batteries Duracell PRO seem to last better as for cheaper offers Halfords or TOYsRus do some crackin deals

Wind-up megger worked fine for connection between the urinal and the metal grate during 80's apprenticeships...(not that I was involved in any way)

Oh yeah! Here son hold onto that a minute......the good old days.
my metrel 3125 uses rechargeables and when it's not got enough juice it tells you and shuts down.procell r ok but like everything battery powered they don't like being left in a cold van

If you have Home Bargins near by, batteries are cheap, usually Duracell or Enegiser........

Tesco recently did a buy a pack of 8 and get extra 2 packs free, once they have gone I shall go onto Lithium to try.
My Fluke 1652B gets a bit funny when the voltage drops to 7.7v.
