Cable schedules.
Can some body please explain what each digit on this type of info means?

1 x 1 x 4c is one cable with 4 cores

4 x 1 x 4c is 4 cables with 4 cores

I think this is correct but what does the middle digit represent?

Could be a cable size, there should be some explanation on the drawing so it is not ambiguous

James just beat me,
but as above where is that from,


I would read that as
1 of 1mm 4 core
4 of 1mm 4core

But I can't say I've ever seen it written like that, but may be specific to a sector.

This is on our standard cable schedules we use, but I've never really got to grips with it as a system.

No ,the cable size comes after. Eg 4 x 1 x 4c 240mm² swa xlpe.

Never seen it written like that before, you say it is on a cable schedule what type of cable schedule. A picture would be good.

I've not got the sheet with Me today. But from left to right column 1 is circuit number, 2 is circuit reference, 3 is cores ( 1 x 1 x 3c etc), 4 is cable size and 5 is cable type ( which are all XLPE swa).
Column 3 and 4 are in the picture.

Yes that's how I read it , but what is the x 1 in the middle. ?
Or Is it 2 of 1 cable with 4 cores?

Two cables each one being 240.0?
Not sure never seen it written like that.
