Hello,

Firstly great forum I have enjoyed reading the threads and topics. A lot of interesting stuff on here.

I am 26 years old and have been working in the construction game for around 7/8 years mainly labouring and such. I am currently working self employed for a local loft conversion company doing the roofing and external finishes (fascia's, tiling, gutters, windows etc.) I am not enjoying this anymore. I have also been doing quite a bit of weekend work with a friend of mine who is an electrician and enjoying it. I have put a lot of thought into this career change and I am very determined. I think now is the time to do it as I'm not getting any younger!!

I am looking at getting into an apprenticeship, not looking at a quick fix. Want to do things the proper way. Been in touch with my local college and have found the course I want; C&G 2357. I have been emailing and phoning round all the local contractors to me and have had a few more replies than I expected to be honest. I have been for one interview so hopefully something will come out of that.

I have bought a tool bag full of I suppose a starter kit for electricians (wear screwdrivers, knipex pliers, wire stripper and few other bits). I also have some money saved up towards a van and am looking at selling my car to put towards a van as well. I hope this will make me more appealing to potential employers.

Anyway sorry to waffle on.....

Thanks

Darren

Hello Dan,welcome and good luck

Welcome along. Good luck with your career change. It sounds like you're doing all the right things.

I wouldn't rush to get a van unless you really need it. Many employers may supply one, or you could use your car in the short term.

Once you get started, there's a trainee section on this forum which would be worth joining.

Welcome along Darren good luck with your career change and I agree with impeeded loop, Don't go rushing to get a van you really shouldn't need one if you're going to be working for a company. All an employer will be looking for is a clean driving license and the fact that you can get to work on time in your own car is a bonus.

Just an update...
Have got myself an employer and got into college.
Start 2357 in September....
buzzing like
cheers

My suggestion is read up before.the.course.starts.... Look good and get all you can out of tutors and people you work with.
