A bit of a problem with a 4 post car lift yesterday.
I was in last week and tested it, two 20amp cartridge fuses blown, motor winding shot at. The machine needs no limit switch control, as it's done mechanically via an interlock, automatically operating a start button via a hand lever with hydraulic limit. I could have dismantled it, inside a steel cabinet/oil sump, as it was obviously a starter fault but a replacement 'old' Brook starter would be difficult to get hold of. I advised contacting their usual engineer about the spares as they have quite a few lifts and ramps. They could remove the motor, too, for rewind.
Some bloke rolled up Monday, took it apart and found the starter 'jammed', he said. He fitted a new starter on the 'outside' of the cabinet, 'replaced' the fuses and gave it a go. The Dis board is above a bloke working at a desk and he left the DB door ajar. Next thing....fizz, spark shower, bang.... jumped out the chair. Nothing like a bit of 30amp fusewire….especially when, as he later explained on the phone, he couldn't test the motor 'til it was live!
