hi forums,

i am currently enduring my long apprenticeship to become an qualified sparks

i am loving my job at the moment, i have been currently working for a month now and all the sockets etc i have installed have been live tested and all work which i am very proud of,

i am looking for some guidance relating to 1st FIXING (Which to be honest i am not a major fan of :P) also looking to join the forums to chat to fellow sparks

My name is Brad by the way

welcome the fun is just beginning

I'm looking on some advice about Cable Capping, the site i am working on want us to cap all our cables back to the wall and i am not a fan of it because i am not very good at it, always end up hitting my fingers etc could anyone give me any advice on what i could use, possibly tools or a little device so that i can make capping less of an annoyance

welcome. and what sort of guidance to 1st fixing. it's the bit you do for the spreads to mess up.

use little taps to start then hammer away.

you will get the hang of it eventually

would the quality of hammer matter i was just wondering? any hammers you guys would recommend? because i am fed up with hitting my fingers :P hurts especially right on the finger nail

16oz. claw hammer. i hate capping as well. much prefer egatube. clips are drilled and plugged in the wall and the tube clipped in. tight-arsed bosses won't pay the extra cost, though.

okay cool :) thanks man will go and get one on the weekend probably :) capping defo worst thing about 1st fixing :P

B&Q do a decent own brand one for about a tenner. don't go for the £2.99 crap.

haha yeah i know the 2.99 stuff is like tesco's blue stripe ;) the nail probably take more hits than the actual hammer its self before it either bends or brakes :P

Welcome to the world of electrics, an if you become half as good as me, you will do well.

Welcome Brad I have scarred fingers as well you'll get used to it

The only thing with the hammer that will make a difference is the weight of it. A heavier hammer will take less swings to get the desired result, the downside of that is of course the risk of hitting yourself because it'll hurt more.
When capping on brickwork I sometimes drill a 5.5mm hole, plug it and then drive the nail into that if I'm struggling to get a fixing.

Welcome mate. Are you sure you are using the correct type of hammer? ie. left or right handed? ;)
