Hello everyone,

Basically I am seeking advice about what to do next. I have gained the 2330 City & Guild Electrotechnical Level 3 qualification, 17th Edition and a CSCS Card. I recently got my first electrical job, which is temporary, working as an Electricians Mate. I was told by one of the lads who I work with that I can take pictures of all my work which then could maybe be added to my portfolio. So that same day I went into college and asked if this was true, they said no as it's only a temporary job and they have to have someone come out from college and assess me on site. I asked if there was any other way and what I could do next and they said "Just look for an apprenticeship". I have been looking for an apprenticeship for 3 years but with no luck, plus I am 22 now and time is running out. I am constantly writing, phoning, applying to companies but with no luck. I find a vacancy which would suit me to a tee but I always get rejected. I have spent over 200 pounds out of my own money on tools to be more admirable, plus I paid for the 17th Edition myself. I have a driving licence but no car and I am willing to travel.

Is there any other way I can get qualified?
Is there any thing I can do to help get an apprenticeship?

I just really want to make a start on my portfolio and progress.

Thank you!

Keep all those photos as with the new online nvq you will be able to do a reflective account on jobs and use these as evidence

Check out xs training, a forum sponser on the right hand side off the page..seeing as you've got your city and guilds 2330 you can use photo's and witness statements also keep notes of what you've been doing this way your be able to complete your nvq..

If you have completed the 2330 etc.. then what were you doing back in college?

What you need now is the NVQ Level 3. Get on it as soon as possible and pay for it (what is a grand in the greater scheme of things?). Get onto the NVQ provider and they will let you know all you have to do to meet the criteria to get it done.

let us know any problems you have and hopefully we can can help.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help. I'll get on it straight away.

The reason I went into college was to check if I could use the photos from my current job towards my NVQ because I wasn't sure. But they said I can't do it as they need to send someone from the college to assess me so all the photos I take can't be used towards my NVQ.

i think glenn meant that what the college said was a lie, not what you said.

Well that's what the college said. I was shocked to be honest because they offered no advice to what I could do or even point me in the right direction. They said that I'm gonna need to be in a job that will last at least a year so look for an apprenticeship.

It isn't the length of the job, it's the breadth of work covered, and photo's don't count for anything, that's an electrical myth. (anyone can pose for a photo!).

Basically you have to cover eight different units twice, over two different jobs. All units have to have supporting evidence, such as materials requisitions, delivery sheets, method statements, test results, manufacturer's data, etc.. and the most important part of all, is that all this evidence is only in support of your WRITTEN account of the jobs, evidenced by your on site assessor and counter-signed by your superior.

YEAH.....

It ain't all the photo posing that some people on here believe!

Do the NVQ3 and AM2 for REAL, and you can't fake it son.

Hope that helps.

ok, just read back through the posts.

@CON1234-the original OP- here it goes.

If and when you sign up with an NVQ provider, they will supply you with all the information you need to in turn provide them with all the evidence you need to support your case for being awarded the NVQ.

If this is unclear, let me surmise.

An NVQ is not a qualification. It is a recognition that you ARE WORKING TO AN AGREED STANDARD.

To recognise that, you have to provide recent evidence of your work.

Once all the evidence of your full range of work has been gathered and verified over a specified amount of time, will the NVQ be awarded.

As mine was.

As yours will surely,

in time,

Good luck.
