Has me in a state of confusion...

We live in an early 80's house so the wires coming from the ceiling are 3 red, 3 black (one with blue tape, assuming they ran out of red) and 1 earth. Our new ceiling light has 3 blue, 3 brown and 1 earth.

I have tried a multitude of combinations and have failed to get the light to work at the same time as the switch i.e if the light does come on the switch does nothing. Other attempts have stopped other lights downstairs working correctly.

Could you possible advise how you would deal with this situation? I feel like i have tried nearly every combination.

Thanks in advance

the three reds do not connect into the light, the black with the blue tape is the live and the other 2 blacks is the neutrals

I get that, the one with the tape is the switch live, but why on earth does it have so many other wires that he says are coming from the ceiling??
being a student ive only ever seen 3 wires in a lamp, does then the other connect and goes off to another lamp as a switch loop feed?

The new ceiling light has 3 blue and 3 brown and 1 earth with a blue and brown terminating in 3 bulbs.

There are two switches in our living room which used to operate the old light independently.

So I will place:
the reds together not connected to the light.
black with blue tape into the brown from the light.
black with no tape into the blue.

Correct?

Sounds like a good place to start
