The simple job of a new ceiling light

Has me in a state of confusion...

We live in an early 80's house so the wires coming from the ceiling are 3 red, 3 black (one with blue tape, assuming they ran out of red) and 1 earth. Our new ceiling light has 3 blue, 3 brown and 1 earth.

I have tried a multitude of combinations and have failed to get the light to work at the same time as the switch i.e if the light does come on the switch does nothing. Other attempts have stopped other lights downstairs working correctly.

Could you possible advise how you would deal with this situation? I feel like i have tried nearly every combination.

Funny you should say that.

Today I've been looking at the landing light at my own house with the view of converting it to 3 way switching and adding an extra light and I have the choice of feeding the switch or using the more "conventional?" method.

So far - and after half a bottle of Port which because of the meds. I'm taking I shouldn't have - the feed to the switch looks like a nice option.

If all the other fittings work then
Could be any of the following 4 (and possibly some others):
a dead on arrival fitting
OR
bad lamps out of the box
OR
Dead light switch
OR
Switch cable damaged by screw for new light mounting bracket.

why can't we take the feed to the switch on any other day of the year?
