Hi,

Got called to a customer today, background is he has been doing some DIY... he had replaced a load of light fittings and plug sockets, he said we extended this one here and burried it in the wall etc... found one twisted together with tape, no connectors etc... anyway..

The problem is, since yesterday, he said the plugs downstairs don't work... hmmm

I plugged the socket tested in, beep beep beep beep beep, Earth and Live Reverse.... so i go to another, and get the same, then go to another, and its already beeping at me without switching the switch on, its a Fluke socket tester, first two are lit up, then switch it on then its just the first one so suggest Live earth reverse.

I then get the MFT out, plug it in at a socket,

Line to Neutral = 5.5v
Line to Earth = 230v
Neutral to Earth = 230v

Hmm, that's not right...

I pulled off all the face plates down stairs that I could that appears to be on that circuit one at a time thinking ill find the problem, but nope, nothing, all seemed in order (a mess but in the right holes). They said they did not extend or chop any circuits on the plugs, only the lights (they work fine).

Oh its a radial by the way.

So then the lounge, I took the faceplate off, left all conductors hanging (terminated in wagos) turned back on, same problem on sockets, but the ones he had changed were all dead, so im thinking must be somewhere else, put it back together.

Looked at the consumer unit, dual split board, a mess, blatant cowboy who fitted it, everything in the wrong places etc, but anyway, RCD protected. So the circuit was holding fine, as was the RCD.

I put a jumper between Line and Earth and then went round the sockets to get an R1+R2, all seemed pretty much in order, went round everything I could find, all seemed to be ok.

Then hooked Line to Neutral, went round the sockets, not a bloody sausage, nothing, not on any socket anywhere, nothing hooked off the circuit.

Then hooked Neutral to Earth and got a reading on everything.

So then I thought, well everything appears to be in the correct places so what the hells going on... I said it Friday night, I want to go home now thanks, and am going back next Tuesday and have left the circuit off.

My next step is to remove all faceplates on the circuit, so perhaps 15 say, then try to connect one at a time and see what happens.

Has anyone got a better suggestion as ill be honest, im stumped on this, I normally find these things quick and move on, but I spent 2.5 hours then this evening and couldn't work it out.

He assures me he has only changed Faceplates, only 4 of them down stairs in the lounge, you could see they were new. He has not touched anything else on the plug circuit.

As everything was unplugged this is what is not helping, I'll let you know how I get on when I go back.

if every thing is plugged in the its defiantly a neutral fault as i said , imagin a Lamp 230 volt in ,dont bother to connect the neutral and then test on the opposing lamp terminal of the light bulb to earth you will get 230 v its the same with a lost neutral and if its a supply neutral it will appear as though the live and earth have been reversed this is one reason you should never rely on socket testers and volt sticks treat every appliance as a load live in neutral out no neutral you will have 230 volts on the outgoing of the appliance when you test between neutral and earth

Yes I am going to go on the Stowfords Press today, it is only 2-50 a pint in the stadium, will go out about 12-45 and back around 6pm I suspect, I am just about to have a shower and get my shirt on lol, should be a really good game, the stadium is sold out and they are closing Kingsholm road for the afternoon. Apparently there is going to be a street party and it is practise for the policing because next year our Ground is going to hold 10 televised world cup matches. I expect there will be a lot of police about to shout abuse at haha
i thought you meant that Leeds UTD fans were turning up Mike when i read this....

Unlucky grandad, on the day the better team showed you the way home  But why you had the buffon 13trees kicking goals I'll never understand ......

The match wasn't decided by kicks, the match was decided by one of our players nearly decapitating a bath player. He got sent off, then it was 15 against 14 and we were then struggling. Eventually we were down to 11 men against 15 and still winning with less than 4 minutes to go, the ref was all over the place and anyone watching the match knew although twelvetrees missed 3 kicks he wasn't to blame. I will tell you what though badge it was a brilliant atmosphere today and fair play to the Bath supporters in the shed joining in, great fun, see you lot next season.

But if billy13trees -- who im no admirer of -- had got his kicks within 10m of the posts the game would have had a different ending! The Gloucester players wouldn't have had to take the risks they did ...... you need more Welsh players in your side

Funnily enough Hibbard was at the match today showing off his golden locks of hair, he has been signed for next season, regarding the kicks, Twelvetrees has had to take over because cook was on the subs bench and Freddie burns is a total **** and going to leicester. We need a new kicker admittedly, but the near decapitation was the reason we lost today.

Get a grip! Leeds Utd fans? Do they really exists .....
I lived all over the place and one thing that is without doubt a complete constant (apart from the obligatory plastic manure or liverpo etc) is that Leeds supporters are everywhere… the one and only real sleeping giant is stirring, beware Leeds Utd are finally waking up …leeds leeds leeds

They will be back where they belong sooner or later ,

thing is its a big club for a big city...

the catchment area is huge...

look at it like this:

theres 590,000 people live in west Leeds alone....thats more than the whole of either Liverpool, Sheffield or Bristol...

The truth is this ; You can go wherever you want and meet true Leeds fans , always remaining loyal , no matter what league their in ,,,,

.... We need a new kicker admittedly, but the near decapitation was the reason we lost today.

But that was borne out because the kicker (Billy no mates ) couldnt do his job and left the rest of the team having do do something drastic to avoid more points being put over them! And Hibbard cant kick so you best get something ready for next season .....

I went to watch them a few times in the 80's but only becasue I was seeing a bit of skirt from the area .....made for a good Saturday out, few beers, trip to Elland road then back to the house for a bit of indoor sport :smiley2:

Tomorrow will be a good day when the mighty Blades win the semi final at Wembley

In a word, YES!

If he didn't want to work late on a friday he should have turned the job down, everyone knows there is no such thing as an easy fix job on a friday afternoon!

Once you have started the job it becomes your responsibility and you work till it is finished.

And yes I do practice what I preach and do work late into the night and have done over 24 hours straight in the past to get a job done.

That's just good customer service and I do the same

How is that being fair? Anyone who takes the word of a customer who has 'just' changed a socket is asking for a late night!

Every time a customer says I only did xxxxxxx then you know you are into a long job if only to wring out of the customer the real facts to give you a fighting chance of locating the fault without dismantling everything. Many years ago had a call one Xmas eve at 2pm just finished decorating the hall, stairs and landing and all the lights have gone off can you fix it before 5pm found the fault quite quickly switch located between two door frames and a picture above the switch which he claimed to have reused the old hole only this time he had got the live and the earth as he had replaced the picture hook then he mentions he got a tingle off it when he removed it so how long it was live for I don't know

I always try to leave at least one socket on for the kettle so's the nice customer can make plenty.

Was asked by a customer whether all the power would be off while I did some work for him my reply was apart from 1 hour while I swapped a CU there would always be at least one socket on for the kettle and the toaster. Was one of the best customers I have worked for him and his wife had good sense of humour and there was plenty of banter
