Hi,
I have bachelor degree in electrical engineering(its foreign but recognized by NARIC as British) also I just passed 17th edition. Can I apply for ECS Gold card and which one.
Thank you.

With those qualifications ECS will not issue a gold card.
They have specific qualifications that are recognised and required to receive the appropriate card.
Below is a list from the ECS website that details the qualifications required.
Generally you need to have done the core qualifications and the NVQ3 to get a gold card.

Why would an Electrical Engineer want to hold a JIB electricians card??

Thing is I used to work as an electrical engineer but at the moment there is a gap in my career. So I thought if I get that card will be advantageous cos at the moment I'm looking for any job within electrical side to get back on track.
I still can't understand why I have to do NVQ if I'm a graduate engineer.

no u will not get gold j.i.b card lol, if u can I will just get a lvl 3 in catering and apply for gold card lol

I still cant get it what are the system in this country. Can you explain me whats beter graduate electrical engineering diploma or NVQ. Sound like when you finished school you are in higher level than those how finished uni.

although my answer was tongue and cheek why would a decent electrical engineer not want one?

I know it was a tongue in cheek post, so was mine!! lol!!

However to answer the above, it's because an Electrical Engineer isn't a working tradesmen and therefore doesn't and wouldn't need a JIB/SJIB card or be remotely interested in holding one. Far more likely for an Electrical Engineer to be a member of a recognised institute such as ITE or CIBS. A decent Engineer would be far more interested in becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng) of those Institutes. Certainly wouldn't be interested in holding a JIB/SJIB electricians card, Approved or otherwise.

Hello and welcome. My view on this is as follows: You have the technical/scientific knowledge but the ECS may doubt that you have the hands on experience of an electrician. I'm sure that you'll agree when I say that what you learn in a class room does not give you practical skills to call yourself a fully qualified electrician

Your qualified to a higher level but it is not as an electrician. It is a bit like an Architect and a Qualified Bricklayer. The Architect knows all the theory of construction but he could not build a house... Well he probably could but he would be learning the practical skills as he went along.

Not at all......

The system is, that a graduate Engineer wouldn't normally be working on the tools, or have any experience of working on the tools as such, therefore you wouldn't hold any tradesmens skills in say the actual erection of installations (eg NVQ's etc). You would have obtained Engineering skills that are based more around the the conception, design and management side of things.

You may however have come up through the ranks so to speak, eg, apprentice - electrician - technician - Engineer, obtaining the relevant qualifications as you progressed. So like myself, you may well have the appropriate trade skills, but why you would even contemplate going back on the tools, a retrograde step in my opinion, is beyond me??

Questions are in no particular order.

Why is there a gap in your career?
Which country did you gain your degree?
If you want work why aren’t you pursuing your field of expertise?
Do you have any practical “hands on” experience?
Have you held any positions as Electrical Engineer?

A JIB card is worthless in most fields. Fields you should be looking to. I would suggest you contact the IET. WWW.----------/Jobs It helps if you are a member.

The company I worked for (I’m retired) would on taking on a graduate send them out on to the works to gain an insight of the industry. At least then they had an idea of what they were talking about, sadly far too many recent graduates hadn’t a clue of the real world.

Thing is my miss been transfered with her job to uk 4 years ago and we came over. My language wasn't that good(now getting better) So then I went for any job. Now I feel that my English is a bit better. I decided to get back on track. I thought I'd pass 17th edition and I'll be able to do electrical job on my own but there's plenty things to do to become compete.
I'm applying for engineers jobs but with no luck. Probably that I haven't got experience in UK.

During my studies I had plenty of experience cos the uni sends time by time to the companies to gain practical skils.

So I'm not sure how to get back on track thought if I'll start as electrician to gain some experience in UK to get back on track. Looking to hook up on something.

From what country did you gain your Degree??

I'm afraid that working as an electrician, won't help you in gaining employment as an Engineer. Have you had your qualifications authenticated as being recognised by the powers at be?? What field of Electrical Engineering is your field of expertise, ...Building Services, Industrial maintenance, Power Engineering (MV/HV network distribution) etc etc?? Do you have translated letters of reference from previous employers.

Seems at the moment you're in a bit of a ''catch 22'' situation. You really need to get as much information on your qualifications and other relative documentation, etc, together as possible.
Always better to have everything to hand, it could mean the difference between getting a start or being passed over yet again....

Best of luck to you anyway....

If you're applying for a job as an electrician you need to be qualified as one, and the employer will be expecting you to be able to do the job, not just talk about it.
A doctor has to do more training (or 'studying') than a chef, but that doesn't mean at the end of it he's a better chef than one who's done an NVQ in cooking straight out of school.

During a recession you quite often get professionals such as computer programmers complaining they "can't even get a job in a poxy shop", well the employer probably wants someone who can work in a shop, preferably with experience doing so, not an out of work computer programmer who thinks they're too good for the job, better than everyone else and will be off as soon as something 'better' comes up. They probably don't like to think of their shop as "poxy" either.

Because an electrical engineer and an electrician are two different trades entirely.
If you want jib gold card with electrician on it you need nvq level 3. To my knowledge the jib don't issue cards for electrical engineer s.

Not exactly, an Engineer holds Professional Qualifications and an Electrician holds Tradesman Qualifications, but Yes, they are entirely different!!
