What type of forum member are you?
DIY or Homeowner (Perhaps seeking pro advice, or an electrician)
We are renovating our kitchen/bathroom. installing an oven, and electric shower if possible. but the builder (who afaik is not an eelectrician) has said we would need another wire from our meter to the kitchen..

this would mean removing floor boards, digging through floor etc..

so i have that as an option, alternatively i was thinking:

1. if i upgraded my house supply, (for context last year when we switched our meters to smart, the enginner who came said our house power was low and if we were to get EV cars in future, we would need to upgrade the amps/fuse or something)

2. as i can see there is a 'tunnel' of sorts coming out the kitchen, if i get a fibre glass cable through to get the second wire and then pull it..

but surely if i went to my Distributor and upgraded my fusebox/amps or w/e is needed, that should solve the problem?

Additionally would i need some sort of isolation units/spur etc?

Thanks

I would recommend you get an electrician and not the builder although they may be correct.

There is a lot to unpack here.

Is the Kitchen/Bathroom renovation adding more power than was originally there?

Is there now going to be an electric oven where there wasn't before?

A Shower will need its own supply so that could be what he is referring to when he says you need another wire. That is if this is a new shower and there wasn't one there before with a suitable supply that can be reused.

Alternatively because he said another wire from the meter he may mean putting in an additional Consumer Unit to supply that area.

As to upgrading your house supply you may well need to do that also if you are adding extra loads. Though that in itself doesn't solve your problem, you still need cables to distribute that power to where it is needed.

When the engineer said your power was low I would take that to suggest you are on a 60A supply. If you are going to add an EV charger at some point then you will need to upgrade the supply.

I suggest you get an Electrician in who can calculate your required Maximum Demand for everything you are having done now and will add in the near future and then talk you through what is needed to accomplish that.
