I'm 74. a 1 day job takes 2 days, mainly because I'm buggered after 5 hours in a day (with a couple of smoke and beer breaks). Is it me or do all the older guys 60+ that still do jobs that takes 2 days to completely finish which when we was younger we could tin 1 day
lol.I'm 74. a 1 day job takes 2 days, mainly because I'm buggered after 5 hours gasping for air (with a drip of beer and a couple of smoke breaks so that way it takes that long .
Interesting ...I know of 3 guys that have had enough of jobs, vans and the whole farce .They all want out And have a nice set up in a shed/garage etc fixing stuff .less issues , nearly as much money . very few hoops to try and jump through every time they change the goal posts etc !Since the old ticker has gone a bit haywire I am definitely slower. As a result of which I am converting my garage to a workshop and making musical instruments like harp and guitar. I have a dozen jobs repairing guitars and the such like already and nearly finished the conversion. Fortunately I have a stand in for work on the books and still taking work. But up until that point jobs have always been completed in time if anything I have become more efficient and faster doing office refits for instance.
In fact the younguns that work for me invariably are slow and have no stamina. Usually they are shot by 2 p.m. and can't even think straight by the afternoon. There have been exceptions but they are still way slower than me doing connections especially fiddly ones.
That’s another thing, it seems like I loose my screw drivers and other various tools. It seems like you want to keep working because the money is good but damn it seems like I’m buying tools alotIs it me or do all the older guys 60+ that still do jobs that takes 2 days to completely finish which when we was younger we could tin 1 day
I just in case you end up a pearl Gates busking. Lol.Since the old ticker has gone a bit haywire I am definitely slower. As a result of which I am converting my garage to a workshop and making musical instruments like harp and guitar.
My biggest bugbear about the trade is,if you decide semi retire and do 2 or 3 days a week, you,v still got allYou guys are estimating all wrong.... from the words of the great Montgomery Scott...
K. "How long to re-fit?"
S. “Eight weeks. But you don't have eight weeks, so I'll do it for you in two."
K. "Do you always multiply your repair estimates by a factor of four?"
S. "How else to maintain my reputation as a miracle worker?"
My favourite trick is to go to get another tool, put down the one I'd had in my hand, go back with the new one, then start where's-the-effing about the one I'd had before....its getting that way for me has well putting things down on the floor mostly screwdrivers in front of me next thing they are at the back of me ,either I'm losing my mind or the bloody screw driver have legs .
Beta blockers?Since the old ticker has gone a bit haywire I am definitely slower.

Herbalist, don't want any of that muck.Beta blockers?
Pencils!!! I use the pencil, I then do something else for perhaps 30 seconds. I go to get the pencil again..... and it's gone!!! I don't understand how this impossibility happens every single bloody day!Sod's lawsays that you give up looking for that lost screwdriver, then 2 hours later you find it when you are looking for your lost sidecutters.

Now that used to be great...'till the eyes began to fail and I started wearing the cheap readers about 20 years back.Have you looked behind your ear?
Being follicly challenged since eighteen I have never been able to put a pencil behind my ear, so its the one place I know its not.Have you looked behind your ear?
The problem with Steve Vai isn't that he's not a good guitarist - it's that he isn't as good as he thinks he is.Can only be bettered by the Duel with the Devil's advocate by Ry Cooder in the Film Crossroads.

This man has them.Second, though. I reckon someone's got a stall on the market for used pencils!
same here. most close work i can do without any glasses, but for really close and tiny terminals i need them. then when i look away, it's all swimming/blurred.For me... pencils and tape rules... but what annoys me most is wearing glasses for close up work but not for distance. So they're on/off/on/off/off/on... all bl00dy day... then when you think they're on the top of your head where you left them, but not.. you realise that you must have taken them off somewhere... but where ??
I have recently mastered the art of losing my glasses...For me... pencils and tape rules... but what annoys me most is wearing glasses for close up work but not for distance. yous need to slow down a bit.then them knees and back and all the other aches and pains could last longer. state pension buys essentials ... beer and smokes. if you wanna eat, youse need to keep working. then slow down a bit at 75 when you get more freebies off the state.I have recently mastered the art of losing my glasses...
I'm not even 50 yet, although getting close.
I'm not slowing down but I am absolutely knackered by the end of the day.
Still doing 12hrs plus 6 days a week though.
My other half keeps telling me to do less but it's the usual self employed BS... it's hard to say no.
Tool ---- is a real addiction! That’s another thing, it seems like I loose my screw drivers and other various tools. It seems like you want to keep working because the money is good but damn it seems like I’m buying tools alot
And no doubt in some reaches of the internet an actual thing.Tool ---- is a real addiction!
At my last test I was told that I no longer needed glasses for distance vision, and 'tis true. But I've put off switching to reading glasses as I just know with utter cast-iron certainty that I'll be forever losing the expletive things. For me... pencils and tape rules... but what annoys me most is wearing glasses for close up work but not for distance. So they're on/off/on/off/off/on... all bl00dy day...
