I inadvertently connected earth wire to L in bathroom pull cord switch as well as the live wire, I connected the other wire to L1, when I switched light on it worked ok but when switching it off and on again it tripped the breaker as it should, however when I reset breaker light came on and was ok. Why would it stay on and be ok with earth connected to live?

Sounds like you may have a poor earth on that circuit or possibly no earth on the whole installation which could be a DNO earthing issue. I would suggest you get an electrician in to get the circuit / installation checked out ASAP

Ok thanks, will do that. Once I connected the earth to where it should have been ( in daylight where I could see ) everything was fine, but should get it checked anyway .. Thank you.

It’s only 10 minutes work for a sparks to check the house earthing and check the earthing at that point. Certainly worth doing.

You probably realise that it’s important to be sure that if any metal appliance (E.g) washing machine has its casing become live then the relevant protective device will operate.

While correcting your connection error on the surface it may appear to be fine your error in connecting the earth and live conductors together has highlighted an underlying problem with that circuit or potentially the whole installation

Most definitely yes you should for your safety and the safety of others in the property as @timhoward says it is not a big job to have it checked
