Anyone recognise this MCB/switch?

Does anyone recognise the switch at the far right-hand end of this consumer unit; the one marked 'LIGHTS' ?

Is it an MCB or a switch?

I suspect that it is a Wylex skeleton board and a bodged sheet metal cover looking at the way the tails enter the "enclosure"

The CU is is a property I'm buying. I think the cover is home made. It certainly has no IP rating with that big hole in it. I think it's as old Wylex fuse box behind the cover.

The main switch lever is broken as is the switch on the mystery MCB, which does look like a Dorman Smith - thanks to the forum members who suggested this.

The property is to be let out so at the very least the main switch, MCB and cover need fixing. Best option would appear to be a new CU, but I'm wondering what will fit into the flush housing in the picture. I'll probably post another question regarding this.

Buy a new CU, the Wylex type that is installed is older than the hills and the Wylex MCB I seem to recall being banned now so you would never be able to buy them (If this is a wrong train of thought on my part I am up for correction). The fact that CU has been butchered is a good reason to replace it.

If the space is too small then I would suggest buying two small CU's that can be stacked on top of each other, lighting in one, power in the other..seen this done a few times over the years.

Agree with the change Out'.....not heard of any ban concerning the mcb, though. Buying difficult, but do have a few...used.

I think the ban is an "effective one" in that the British Standard they were made too was revoked and there are no figures for them in 7671:2008 (Not sure about 7671:2001 though) which effectively bans them as you cannot work out disconnection times etc...I know Wylex haven't made them in at least a decade, possibly longer.

controlgear do a double decker CU 20way thats 292mm wide, through Denmans, MCBs and RCBOS are priced well. Might just fit

I wouldn't feel right if i didn't replace the cu, the company i work for would insist on upgrading to 17th on all rental properties and testing is done every three years by an independent electrician. Fussy, yes they are, but the safety of the tenants is paramount. it also keeps me on my toes, and keeps me in work.

If OP withdraws the mcb from the board all the relevant info is mold-printed on the side of the device.....it would have been quicker than taking a pic up-loading it and starting a thread :smug:

As far as i am concerned the cu needs to be upgraded, he has stated that it is for rental, what kind of landlord rents out properties with butchered and outdated installs like this one, i thought Rachmanism was a thing of the past. I dread to think what the rest of the place looks like.
