my task... to replace 1980's wylex with 3871 MCBs that are goosed. replace all sockets and switches with new stainless fittings. repair any faults found.

preliminary tests show that RFC ) 1 for whole house) has no end/end readings whatever. OK. maybe it's 2 radials stuffed in 1 MCB. quick power up of 1 leg only. 8 sockets all good. power up other leg and 7 sockets have L-N reversal. nothing amiss in back of sockets. so it's back tomorrow for floorboard removal. hopefully when carpets are up, i'll find where the dipstick has been.

The council left an L->N fault on the parents lighting circuit before they bought it out (that was 27 years ago...)I found the fault 5 years ago...but the old man keeps putting off emptying the box room so I can get the floor up as thats the only place left they could have hidden a JB - correct way round at the CU and correct way round at the octopus box in the loft..

I only found out as the old man got a belt changing a light fitting, so I get a phone call...checked the light switch was off, power still at rose (should be a switched feed only), checked the switch, no power whether on or off...checked "neutral" to earth...240...hmm...
