This is business though if the market bears the prices you are going to charge them. If I look at mechanics, gas fitters, painters, builders and many other trades we as electricians are way below what they are charging. Considering the technical nature of our work I think we should be earning a lot more personally. In Germany if you say you are an electrician you get a lot of respect as they recognise the complexity of the work and training. That is not to say other trades are not "technical" it's just the price differential is low for us I think. If I could get a £1000 for an EICR I would be doing them day in and day out!

Yes people get caught sometimes for high price, brother just payed 15k to get his house wired.. I could of done it for less as just myself to entertain, the other guy has Van's, quality tools, office, office staff , niceic subscriptions, electric safe , pays for his staffs courses.. always bigger picture.

Seems to me that the problem underlying both the cost of the EICR and the cost of the remedial work is the day rate of £800 plus VAT. That is probably because you are using a big firm and not a self-employed tradesman.

In principle you shouldn't give the rectification work to the same firm/person that did the EICR because they have a vested interest in the result. For this I would consider either getting three quotes, or finding a forum member near you. If doing the former, I'd also consider getting a new EICR, again avoiding a big firm - I agree with the suggestion that about £300 should be reasonable

Although some faults can be very tricky to find, continuity on a ring main should be pretty straightforward and I agree with others that to find the fault should not take a day. So if you halve the day rate, and halve the time, you might be in the right ballpark. Fixing it is a different matter though - and they haven't even quoted you for that.

just wondering if the firm the OP got in for this is JAWS Electrics. coz. theys deffinitely a load of sharks.

That is big money, my first thought is franchised company. I had dealings with such a company 30 years ago quick response for a burst pipe, their rates were extortionate.

My first thought is unscrupulous robbing b@stards.

Need to up my prices I think ?‍♂️ that’s scandalous don’t give the guy any further work or money

Looks very Lambeth based ....

Some list there.... pity they hadn’t proof read it beforehand. (Item 15, “up” rating??? That’ll be IP)

If the whole place was redone in 2012, there should be nothing wrong with the switches and sockets unless they’re physically damaged, which he has picked up in a couple times. “Discoloured” isn’t really under the BS7671 remit.
item 5 - extrenuos is quite impressive too.

misspellings may be a minor thing, but they do show a lack of care in collating what could easily become a document picked over in a court of law - sadly unless something serious actually happens, there seems to be very little come back or monitoring of the quality of these reports.

accessories "of age" is a new one to me - sounds like a Victorian tinder profile....

I might only be 30 miles or so from Central London but it really is a different world with those prices - though even then these sound like a company who are more interested in making money than building customer relations.

only the tip of the iceberg there's loads at it, worked (briefly) for a similar set up 20 years ago, could have earnt over 3 grand a week back then.

My plumber uncle reckons that for some having 5 of their fancyvans lined up outside their hampstead pad is a version of showing off to the neighbours, "loadsamoney" if you will.

I have to say that report looks like a complete ---- take.

I quoted for some remedial works at a hospital off the back of a very long and detailed report, roughly three days work including materials cost was just under £3500.

Maybe we're just letting ourselves be undervalued? Spotted this in the comments of a Thomas Nagy EICR on Youtube.

Undervalued?... I think you're right, too many people focused on price, not quality. There are many more variables than price..........now ...........where are my peanuts?
