I take it you are referring to the vehicle loop detectors that are placed in the road in front of traffic lights?

none taken darkwood.

Yes its for a school with a car barrier. I was just wondering if the terminations inside (ive been told been told and i quote) "the big orange box" need to be soldered in or wether they are screw terminations. I beleive this is the cable (loop) for the sensor as ive been told the supply is already feeding it and in. hope that makes sense. Its just to help a friend who had to cut the working istallation back for some reason.

ps prob loads more sp mistakes in here but the spell checker isnt avaliable

Can anyone say why they must be soldered? I only ask because all the traffic monitor loops on the A14 at least have been connected by screw terminals!

Spent many a Saturday replacing them. The biggest problem is the foundation slab breaking up under traffic. Obviously the slab can’t be reinforced otherwise the loop constantly detects.

Your biggest problems will come from the ground conditions. Once you get movement the cable will shear breaking the loop.

On the highway 50 tonne wagons have to be accounted for, we were dealing with 175 tonne. Your car park entrance won’t get that hammer, but if the base isn’t there…….

There is a web site I recall that shows how tar macadam reacts under load, I’ll try and find it.

As to soldering, it’s down to reliability.
