Back when I first joined this Forum I got a lot of flack for saying my rate was £50.00/hr do you remember that guys?

£50-60 p/h was probably about the average sparky rate for London 10 years ago. Then you had companies like Pimilco start charging its plumbers and sparks out at £100 p/h / £120 p/h

If people keep paying it then companies will keep raising it

I have kept my rate at £80 per hour for 2 years , but an considering putting it up now as the cost of business has gone up , I am thinking £95 per hour

Sounds very much like Cornwall.
They don't mind spending £200,000 on some machine, but have a fit when you say it's a few hundred to change a CU.

Unfortunately, rightly or wrongly, if your putting your stuff up for public viewing, it's going to attract critique. I think I'm some cases it's constructive and justified, in others not.
I've learnt from the "youtube sparks", both what to do and what not to do.

I've had to entirely unfollow him now. I
get berated for not being AM2 qualified. The latest efixx video basically confirmed that I'm not "a real electrician". And yet Dels latest video shows no understanding of gas interlock. But wait....I'm the unqualified/ inexperienced guy.

I've had to entirely unfollow him now. I
get berated for not being AM2 qualified. The latest efixx video basically confirmed that I'm not "a real electrician". And yet Dels latest video shows no understanding of gas interlock. But wait....I'm the unqualified/ inexperienced guy.

efixx do some good videos, but don't take them too seriously when they talk about what qualifications you need in order to call yourself an electrician.

Yeah don't get me wrong. I really like the guys and have learned a tonne through them. The latest video just wound me up a bit - its worth remembering "electrician" isn't a protected term by law. You Don't need to have a gold card to be competent, which the last video seemed to suggest. But I largely enjoy their content. But the content I see from Del seems to consistently share standards that we on this forum would generally berate if they came from a DIY chap - but seem to be seen as acceptable to some because of his 'experience'.

That's the thing though. You just can't categorise it. I manage a 63 year old ex-install electrician. He's just awful to be frank - won't use a wago - thinks they're flimsy. Bakelite screw junction box suspended in thin air for anything. Safe zones unheard of. My old man however is a Readers Digest special. No qualifications but when I PIR / EICR'd the house he rewired well before I was born (think early 70s) I just couldn't fault it. Fortunately my cousin-by-marriage is a trading spark - when he was relatively new to the famalam I had him do an EICR just I'm case I'd been biased. He couldn't fault it either. He's been married to my cousin for 6 years now and I keep asking if he lied on the report just to impress us. He maintains he didn't. Likewise I work with some fantastic fully qualified AM2 guys in their 60s who are fantastic. I also manage some unqualified entry short course guys who are passionate in the trade who produce fantastic work. I've forgotten my point (it's bank holiday so beers a flowin). But yeah. Peace to all - don't read into the tickets. A passionate guy or gal is all we need.

Sure, there's more to our work than meets the eye, and there are potential consequences if we get it wrong, but that's stretching the imagination a tad. The bulk of their content is good though.

Efixx are for ever pushing the 'qualification' rhetoric , and want sparks to be seen as the higher power when it comes to the trades. I kind of see what their agenda is , and in a way I buy in to it as they want sparks charging £250 per hour for rolls royce installs.
But the real world is full of Delroys and Chris the Plumbers , and that ain't changing any time soon...

Same for me no AM2 and no NVQ 3 either but I have loads of MICC experience

I always remember an apprentice who worked for me in the late 90's failing his first attempt at the AM2 on the fault finding section with a lot of bravado he reckoned I would struggle and wouldn't be able to find it, so having been challenged I asked if he had the sheet with the diagram on and he brought the booklet in the following morning, took me all of 10 minutes to find the fault that he hadn't in 2½ hours

Been 20 years since i was a college and back then it was 236 Pt2 , C and 2391 then you were fully qualled up

It makes sense that people entering the trade are assessed in this manner, but it's plain daft to suggest that someone who qualified prior to its introduction isn't an electrician - it's like suggesting that O levels are now redundant and that everyone who sat them now needs to sit GCSEs.
