Hi guys

I've been considering for a long time now whether or not I want to become an electrician.

I have contacted the local college and im not sure what course I should enroll onto. I have no previous experience so I'm a complete novice.

What courses do you guys recommend I do in becoming a qualified electrician?

I would like to become self-employed in the future but I just want to get my foot in the door and build up my experience.

Thanks in advance

Nathan

City & Guilds 2357. you would need to find employment to get on the course though. It would be 3 years at college with 30hours a week onsite and 1 day a week in the classroom doing theory etc. (Evening classes are available to i think which you wont need employment to enrole on possibly the 2365 but you would have to look that up yourself)

Onsite you will get hands on experience and build up the evidence for your NVQ3 and in college you will do all the underpinning knowledge and some practical installation, testing and faultfinding. At the end once you are complete with the college work and the NVQ you would do the AM2, once thats passed you are technically a fully qualified electrician and could get graded by JIB as electrician/gold card.

Just to let you know there are no shortcuts to becoming qualified, there is lots to learn and it takes time.

what simon says is true, I really struggled in my first year at college but after that it wasn't that bad.

it was a lot harder but easier at the same time because it follows on from the level 2.

makesure to always ask questions of your supervisor of your apprenticeship, of you don't ask they won't always explain.

I cant really see how they can cover 2330 level 2+3 on a 5 week course.

a lot is left out so you really need a thorough understanding of the basics from both levels

the college im looking has Level 2 & 3 2365 but not the 2357 you recommend.

Is the 2365 still a good option to do?

the city and guilds 2357 nvq diploma is the apprenticeship.

you will still need an nvq so I would recommend you try to find an employer first.

Yes they will give you the underpinning knowledge required. Just no onsite practical experience as the NVQ is not involved.

how do I go about securing an appreniceship?

I will be 24 years old in September, would my age effect my chances?

simon is right, if you can do the 2365 without paying for it thats a good idea, you can always transfer your certs to the 2357 when you start the nvq

nope, there is funding for adult apprenticeship's from the goverment.

the only apprentice ive come across on one job was about 30 so you will be fine.

I think you are just in the bracket for jtl so I would recommend you sign up with them and ask the college as well if anyone is taking on.

the problem is most are looking for 16 year olds because they can pay them less

Get on the phone to companies and see how lucky you get. depending on the start date of the course and when you turn 24 will depend on whether there are fees or not i guess

right so I should enroll onto the 2365 level 2 & 3

When that's done, what's the next step?

brilliant

thank you both for your help its much appreciated

the 2357 is the tech and nvq combined so if you get funding for it, it saves a lot of pain later

the 2357 sound more appealing than the 2365 as it sound less hassle.

Should I just email companies and ask if there is apprenticeships for the 2357?

(yes is too short)

Can I ask how you got about getting on the 2357 course?

Maybe posting on this forum asking if any local companies on here are willing to take me on?

I did the 2330 off my own back because I couldn't find a company to take me on (this was pre 2365 and 2357)

when I did some work experience for a guy, it turned out one of his friends who owns another firm was looking to take on an apprentice

Will I have to find a college that offers the 2357 course if I happen to find an apprenticeship or will the company that's taking me on sort out the course for me?
