Hi,

I'm not an electrician - just a normal homeowner looking for a little advice - hopefully you guys can help! I'm sorry this is quite long but I'm trying to give all relevant info!

We have a broken electric meter which will be replaced by our electric provider shortly (1st visit today only to hear they need a different meter so will come back). This has been broken for somewhere between 10 days (when we realised) and 5 weeks (last meter reading, since which the meter has moved but not very much, so we would guess at around 4 weeks broken)

We also have (discovered today) a broken solar power meter - which has been absolutely fine for over 4 years, but when I went to take this quarters reading today it was dead. I know in early August it was working as my father in law mentioned it was generating well.

We also have a broken freezer (as of approx 10 days ago - we removed ice cream from it midweek about when the meter broke and it was still frozen, but the following saturday everything had melted entirely - its in the garage, hard to be more specific I'm afraid). This is 4 years old and no previous problems. The repair guy who also came today and also needs to come back with a part says the "bit on the back" (his words) which controls the frost free functioning has gone and something illegible which probably included "thermostat"

This all seems to be a *huge* co-incidence to me.

We have had several 4 hour plus power cuts over this summer - specifically around 4-8 weeks ago and a couple where they rigged a generator for a while and the put us back on the grid several hours later. we also had a strange power blip around, you guessed it, 10 days ago, where everything dipped and wavered for 3 or 4 minutes about 6am but clocks etc didn't need resetting afterwards.

I think our main meter was broken before this last blip. The freezer not, The solar meter I really don't know.

TV's lightbulbs, anything else connected to power seems to be ok at present.

So - question - can power cuts or *something* result in failed meters? And freezers?

And if it can, where should I look to track down what has happened and what do I need to assemble to prove my case? I am assuming if we can prove cause and effect our rapidly growing bills might be covered in some way by someone?

Have any of your neighbours experienced the same sort of problems?
