Afternoon guys

when in screwfix or your wholesalers- what is your pick when it comes to flat bit/auger bit when it comes to drilling joists for rewires/extensions etc?

brand and type?

The Milwaukee flat bits are good. Avoid the cheap spade bits from toolstation, they twist as soon as offer them to a well seasoned joist.
I'm currently trying toolstation Ti coated spade bits and they seem ok so far.

My old hand auger bit, cut the end off it, file a flat in it, pop it in your drill last for ever.

milwaukee nail proof augers! They are the dogs boll***s. Well worth the money.

+1 for the Irwin Speedbor....Until you hit a few nails

Agree with Lee, I usually buy a new box of the Dewalt spade bits every 18 months or so when most of the previous bits are trying to burn a new hole rather than cut one.. Found they stay sharp for longer. Really dislike the Armeg wood beaver things as they bite far too much for most battery drills.

Auger bits I use the cheap set from Screwfix.

The MAD (multi angle drill) bits are beaut for getting really clean holes.

All my power tools bar my angle grinder and router are Bosch, and I use Bosch accessories for jigsaws, planers etc. So a bit strange for me to jump ship to Dewalt for the spade bits! But was impressed with the first set I got and spose I just stuck with them.

It is a lovely feeling using a brand spanking new hand saw or spade bit, knife butter springs to mind. Sadly that honeymoon period doesn't last long!!

Not used the Dewalt, Milwaukee, or the Irwin Speedbor, but I've heard the Speedbor are like the Armeg ones (which I have used) but a bit gentler. The Armeg ones are good but the Bosch Self Cut ones are superb, you don't have to put any effort in at all and they're very quick.

Buy a decent drill then!!!!

Only tried the bit once and was not impressed. I was rushing around at the time and don't think I tried it on the higher torque setting so maybe that's the problem, as the bits do generally get good reviews.

My drills are decent by the way!!!!

Due for some bits and this sold it for me. The house bashers amongs you may benifit with a nail proof set like the armeg.

fine on that new raw soft timber we get houses thown up with these days. how will it cope with 200 year old oak or pitch pine?

Auger over flat bits all day for me. I got a good chippy to show mw how to sharpen them with a flat file so they last for ages. Hit a nail? No problem. 2 minutes with the file and like new again.
