I've been fitting a kitchen this week with my mate, he is a chippy but I do fit kitchens when asked. I've got a few lined up and are too busy to be at job a full week. We were discussing money when he chirped up and said he will work for £200 per day as we are mates! I asked him is he being serious and he said yes... He has to cover the cost of the router, jig, planes etc (all of which I have!). Apparently chippys gear is far more expensive than ours so they need to charge more to cover the costs.

What a joke! I appreciate each trade his their own skills and my carpentry is not a patch on his but a basic L shape kitchen does not justify that amount of money, especially when we don't even need to mason mitre these work tops.

Am I missing something here!?

Rant over although still steaming!!!

Would be kicking his heels in most parts of the country. Most I know cost 110-130 a day

That's what I said to him, I gave him work as he was sitting at home doing nothing. Trouble how can you recommend somebody out at that price. What made me laugh was when he said it doesn't include fixings! I might put on my quotes doesn't include fixings, could make a mint on screws and grommets!

Me and a mate were fitting a kitchen once and asked a joiner to come and sort the worktop out as we didn't want to mess it up. For mates rates he asked for £80 a cut (2 mitred corners and a sink to do).
For (a lot less than) that money we bought a jig, a router, a worktop router bit set, and did it ourselves. Piece of proverbial !

Sound like these people that go out and buy a fully loaded DB and fit it themselves ....Piece of proerbial ???

Difference being, I'm not gonna kill anyone or burn their house down if my mitred joints aren't perfectly flush, which they were :)

My mate fits kitchens, all the new gear. He's 1st class workmanship and he charges me 120 a day mates rates, and works till its done! Down south as well.

£200 a day? No wonder he was sat at home doing nothing. Get someone else.

And £80 A CUT!? A CUT?! What!? Jaysus!

it's £80 a cut to allow for buying a new worktop after buggerring the first one.

I know, yet he can't see why he's at home! In the end done it myself I can't justify that amount of money per day, which probably does sound quite harsh looking back at it

Most trades in my area are £160-£180 per day. Heating engineers seem to be about £300-£400 from what I've heard my customers pay. Sparkies tend to be around about £200-£250.
The trouble with working alongside other trades, especially on a specific job, is that they want the same rate as you get, as (in their eyes) they are working just as hard as you are.
You ever tried telling another trade that your overheads are more expensive than theirs, or that you have ongoing assessment/calibration/training costs? Save your breath.

I get customers who say WHAT ! HOW MUCH because its a gut reaction from some who would pay £60 to valet the car but baulk at having to pay out for a new CU Plus my mate does kitchens and he has teamed up with a good chippie who is switched on and focused so no bad thing . But me I would not touch it with a barge pole and at the end of the day you get what you pay for.
