Is it me or is there a steep financial burden as well as time and effort for this old electrical lark:-)

I have spent this evening looking for an earth resistance tester will probably cost me £200, £250 this week for public liabilities insurance, £240 for van insurance, £1800 on buying a van tomorrow. But on a positive note my brother in law gave me a nice bottle of Rioja for fitting his new shower pump at the weekend, even had to re plumb it as the plumber had made such a bodge job of the pipe work (All my family are plumbers so I have a fair idea!). I am skint!:-)

Apart from the obvious answer, what do you need the earth resistance tester for?

My brother in law is putting in a new shed/workshop and his earthing arrangements are TT, want to check his existing earth (when he recovers it from where he has put his patio over it!?) and add an additional earth for the shed. I intend to register with Stroma shortly for notification purposes.

A 2001 VW Caddy, old but immaculate, will get me started, have eyes on a Hiace down the road from me but have to convince its owner he wants to sell it, you could eat your dinner off it!:-)

if you can get the hiace, you could park the caddy in it . lol. seriously though. an older but tidy van is a good investment. caddy is the best of the small vans.

Have looked at loads but all crap, don't mind old but for me it's first impressions count. Always had VW's so am off to see this tomorrow, has 39k from new with history hopefully as good as it looks!

Is it only going to be used for the one job then?

It sounds like a bit of an unnecessary expense if so, could you not borrow one for a few beer tokens?

Or failing that, and assuming the requirement for RCDs is met (if that is still in the regs?) then for just one job I'd use the efli method of determining a not quite so accurate value of Ra.
I'm not a fan of the method by any means, but if it's that or spending a few hundred quid on a tester for just one job I'd go with that.

£240 for PL insurance? I just paid about £80 for mine, direct line, £2m limit.

That also has employer liability, as I have set up as a ltd company and have a couple of jobs lined up for which I will need help I had to go this route, this gives me up to 50 days of additional cover for other people helping me and also cover for maintenance and building.

Thanks I will do this, this is the second job locally where I have wanted to test an earth rod. I am fairly rural so TT is quite common. I think this is probably going to be a common theme, in the long run I may keep my eye our for a an earth resistance tester or consider upgrading my MFT to one which has this capability built in.
