Well we have thunder and lightning as well as blizzards ....gotta love that mix... really lights up the snowfall..

thundersnow its called
we got it about 3 or 4 years ago
dumped about 12 inches of snow in 24 hours
that lot lasted from november to march, talk about ice station zebra.
it also knocked loads of phone lines out with lightning strikes
best of british!

Was just sharing the rare-ish event in UK and more common to coastal regions with warm sea air meet cold inland air.. Its amongst one of my other geekish interests, I'm a bad weather nerd... going on tornado run in USA when I'm 50... so appreciate the response and yes do know what the media has tagged it as thundersnow but it can be one of 3 variants of causes .... in this circumstance it was a standard thunderstorm similar to how they form in summer nothing different as it was 9 degrees this morning and hit this massive cold front so ideal for this set-up ... sorry just my nerdsville kicking in lol

Well thought I was in a blessed setting to witness a rare event then Winchester gets a ruddy earthquarke lol

They are sometimes on our doorstep https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOyB3hlGOFI

That was in North Wales, there was a recent tornado in West Wales that caused quite a lot of structure damage, all down one street of a village
Although they are on a much smaller scale,I expect that are many tornadoes formed in the UK each year

I saw a film of someone having a tornado holiday on the telly last year, they were almost killed when it got closer than the guide had bargained for,I wish you a close call when you go, but perhaps just far enough away to have a fine experience

The UK is the world capital for tornados albiet on a very much smaller scale than Tornado Alley in the USA .... a fact few people realise :).... we all just associate tornados with either America or The Wizard of Oz!

...Did not know that...explains something i witnessed years ago...cut and baled a small field, stacked in flat eight/sixty fours,so each stack is seven footish high...sat on my mates yard,150 meters away, summers' day...suddenly wind got up,and picked up nearly all of the hay bales, breaking them up,and lifting debris to the height of nearby pylon, approx 90 foot high.

Went quiet after 2 minutes, never seen it before or since. :conehead:

Thats not the same thing these are just little whirlwinds or vortices that do the hay or dust twisters...
