Howdy all,

Looking for some opinions/advice Ime planing out a job for putting power in my shed.
Plan is drill through a socket on the ringmain in the living room wall to the outside, Fit a IP66 FCU with RCD protection, Then off that to a IP66 double socket, then onto my shed with SWA for another socket and light.

Nothing to hairy.

But I was thinking of the best way to join the FCU to the SSO in terms of keeping them watertight as they will be obviously be open to the elements.
So I was thinking of using these:
Masterseal IP56 PVC 20mm Conduit Entry | Outdoor Cable Entry | Screwfix.com

Out the bottom of each unit and then have a bit of 20mm bent between them.

So heres my questions:

Firstly do the above seals work with any 20mm knockout or will the only fit the MK range as Ime planing on going with BG stuff to keep the cost down.

Secondly in terms of drilling through the external wall is there a minimum height to go past to avoid any damp course etc as I cant see any membrane or anything like you sometimes do (house was built around 98 if thats any help) Also what about sealing the hole back up around the T&E cable?
Best to use silicone or just put some mortar around it?

Cheers all.

my comment s in red. drill through wall 20mm and tube through. open the outside hole to25mm to accommodate the elbow.

Cheers Tel,

I wasnt going to bother tubing through the wall just a T&E straight into the back of the FCU, I was then going to Tube between the FCU and the SSO and then Tube the socket and lights in the shed. Oh and the outside light that will be on the shed LOL

if you're going into the back of an outside FCU, then you need to seal round the FCU to stop wet getting in art the cable entry.

20mm tube through wall in 20mm hole. have the tube protruding into the FCU by 1/4". after fitting, seal round top and sides. sssimplesss.

As a matter of interest, why are thinking of using a RCD FCU, isn't the socket circuit you are coming off in the house RCD protected at the CU??

Yes it is RCD protected.
And its actually cheaper to get a RCD unit than non RCD surprisingly.

Although I just managed to get a good price on a MK masterseal FCU and DSSO so ile be using then instead :)

It might be cheaper, but what about discrimination problems; not to mention having to reset 2 RCDs if they trip!

The FCU I was looking at could be got with 10mA RCD.
But like I said ive scored some cheap Masterseals so I will be using them instead of the RCD version first mentioned :)

10mA RCD wouldn't discriminate with a 30mA one unless it was time delayed.

i would use plastic between the two on the outside and conduit glue.

it would give a better seal than galv to a plastic box

Flanged couplers with neoprene washers will seal quite nicely against a plastic enclosure
true but if its just a stub between them plastic will do.

the plastic will never loosen though and i dont like using 20mm bushes because the ones now are so thin they start to deform before you can get them really tight

I don't use male brass bushes anymore unless I have to.
you would to fix to the conduit though :( we use a lot of them and i hate them. i really need to buy a bush spanner.

you cant always get your 21mm socket in

No I don't, locknuts, serrated washer and a female bush for entry to normal enclosures, or a nipple, serrated washer, locknut and female bush if a flange coupler is needed.

I like this one.
