METREL METER FAULT? METREL Easitest MI3000

Hi All,

Anybody have a METREL meter thats trips RCD on triplock setting when Zs is taken?

The fault seems exclusive to the probes lead. The coiled socket lead is not affected and is producing normal readings.

My friend also has an earlier METREL meter (not sure what model) which has exactly the same problem.

His meter passed calibration which l dont understand how, as he has this fault that occurs constantly.

Mine has only just started doing so and ive checked all the settings with 30mA definitely selected on the triplock setting.

Advice anyone plz? May be tomorrow when l check feedback so ill say thanks right now and will get back to anyone that replies asap.

You may already be doing this so forgive me if I am stating the obvious. You have to use all 3 leads separately do not link neutral and earth lead together

read the OP. it's tripping the RCD when Zs testing.

My Metrel tested the Zs (on trip lock) once and it was OK, I then did some work and switched everything on and did the same test which then tripped the RCD, so I assumed this was from additional leakage currents from other circuits pushing it over the trip limit (this was an up front 30mA RCD).

Thanks for the usual swift replies. Although l normally short neutral and earth together, as instructed to do by college tutors, 4 years ago, l have attained satisfactory readings using this method on numerous occasions. And besides how often are is it even possible to perform a 3 lead test on for instance a light switch? There's normally no neutral (unless it has been carried through the switch). I have never actually performed a 3 lead Zs test using the probe leads on this meter, as l have never had a reason to do so, but l will attempt this out of curiosity, at a location where possible and report back my findings. Thanks... JJ

You can do the ZS with earth and neutral linked together on a circuit without an RCD but with an RCD you will have to use the three leads so I'm afraid it get your steps off the van, take the light fitting cover off and then try and hold all three leads, the tester, press the test button and still maintain 3 points of contact on your steps and hold your cup of tea at the same time!!! O and remember it takes the tester about 3 Hours !! to perform the trip lock test.
Or you could just do A R1 + R2 test it at the light switch and Calculate the ZS

You don't need a wounder lead , turn off circuit and and lock it off check circuit is dead at light switch connect the earth to the live and do the R1+R2 test at the CU and then calculate ZS

I have this meter and i always use three fingers of one hand to hold probes and other hand to press test. That's where megger are good with the auto-start thing.

Remote probes are also available for Metrel testers (although they're fairly bulky)
