Cost of isolating the incoming supply

That's actually a reasonable price if it includes a call-out and materials. They can't be making much profit surely.

Seeing as every DNO installation should include a means of isolation in the first place, they've got a bloody cheek charging any price!! Especially when every installation has been subject to ''Standing Charges'' for god knows how many years on the basis of serviceability/upgrading of the supply. Any costs relating to providing an isolator has already been paid many times over, .....and then some!! lol!!

i dont give a stuff what this energy supplier & that energy supplier says...

Thanks for the info. Its in the Wrexham area the DNO is Scottish Power they don't come out to do it we have to contact each provider depending on who the tenant has. I managed to get a price of British Gas they'll come out and fit the isolator for £39.92 +VAT. This is going to be a nightmare as this is for over 400+ houses over the next 4 yrs. We can't cut the seals or get some jo blogs from the pub if we do we are of the job.

Why not enquire about getting permission from Scottish Power to cut and replace the seals?? From what i can understand from some members here, that there DNO companies allow and sometimes encourage this.

I would be inclined to see if you can buy seals off them and maybe pay a small fee to be allowed to cut your own seals over 400 houses may make it viable for both parties.

i spoke to my lecturer about this issue a few months back, he said

"yer often when there are seals, and its going to be a hassle to get the DNO involved etc etc,....quite often, when you look close, real close, you will notice that there never were any seals,...was a trick of the eye.................wink"

Unfortunately, the domestic sector of the industry is now Swamped with 17 day whizz kids/electrical trainee's that actually think they are ''Qualified''!! I certainly wouldn't let any of them loose with a pot of official seals with permission to cut seals, pull service fuses and replace seals....

Where I live the DNO won't fit isolators.

"It's a job for your electrician" is the standard response.

I only call them for anything before the meter.

On the rare occasions I do they turn up promptly and fix it.

yer, thats why i emphasized the word qualified......i rekon that we should have to carry ID cards (like the jib stuff) that say how we were qualified

I guess the other aspect to the "qualified" as opposed to "experienced" thing is assessing the head and main fuse. Which types and conditions mean don't touch it call the DNO? I'm quite happy to cut and pull in most cases, but then you'll get the crumbly looking ceramic holder, or cast head etc that render the exercise both pointless and dangerous.

I've been surprised on a couple of occasions when an "electrician" doesn't realise the importance of removing load before pulling the fuse.

So looking at it from the DNO perspective, how can they judge which sparkies are capable and which aren't? Which sparkies will they accept liability for in other words.

So I guess it's all part of the wider issue which is regularly discussed. i.e. some "electricians" shouldn't be there at all let alone fiddling about with the head.

im suprised they dont do a course that lets you do it, similar to pasma etc that allows you to remove them and then seal up.

surely they wouldnt mind that, I would do it if they threw in a set of gloves and facemask so as long as you use correct ppe its fine

Some of those seals fall of due to location and corrosion, I've found a couple that have fallen off myself,
I think they should make them of a more substantial material

I asked him wth he was playing at and he looked at me like I was the idiot. It seems they don't even train their meter monkeys properly now.

He had the gloves and shield on, I expect he was looking at you peculiar because you were stood next to him and did not . They often never ask to isolate round here. Also I have temp seals from SSE (10 at a time), I inform them and they re-tag when convenient
