Looking to replace current gas hob with an induction hob. Ignition cable for g
as hob runs to a fused spur which in turn runs to a 32 amp fuse. I think current cable is 2.5mm and runs behind tiles walls. Could a new induction hob be wired with this existing cable.

The cable needs to be at least 6mm if on a 32 amp fuse

Thanks for your reply. This is what I thought. The oven has a 6mm cable running from an isolation switch to the oven. Could I simply use a junction box to run a new cable to the hob as well. Access to this cable doesn't mean taking tiles off walls.

How much power does the oven and hob take seperatly? Sometimes you can run the oven on a 13 amp supply and the hob on the 32 amp

Again thanks for the reply. The new hob is likely to be 7.5kw. I need to check the oven when I go to mother in laws later. I can then get back to you. If it can be used with 13 amp would it still then be ok to use a junction box?

I was thinking if ratings allow for hob to be wired to 32 amp on a 6mm cable, and the oven to the fused spur or change for single socket and plug it in.

The oven is a 240v 2.8 kw on the label

That's 11.6 amps, should be OK on a plug top with 13 amp fuse, best to check with manufacturer's

Also be aware that a 7.5kW will never take that full load.
There are various discussions on here about how to calculate the design load, whether a hob on its own, or a hob/oven on same supply…..

So you may find 32A is adequate for hob and oven, without moving the oven onto the general power circuit with possible washing machine, dishwasher, kettle etc to share with.

just come back from mother in laws. The oven which is currently hard wired can be put in a plug. However even though it is currently wired with 6.5mm cable it is linked to a 16 amp fuse at the consumer unit. So working with your suggestion of using the fused spur for the oven will the 16 amp fuse be sufficient for the hob?

I guess you mean 6mm cable? A 16 amp mcb is not really enough even with diversity, then again it depends on the usage a single person who uses 1 or 2 pans started at different times may be OK, a busy family on Xmas day may trip the mcb.

If it is 6mm2 cable all the way, then it's very probable that the 16A MCB could be replaced by a higher rated one, if the correct one is obtainable. It's also possible that both the oven and hob could be supplied by the single cable.
Both of these can only be decided by someone with expert knowledge at the site, so the services of a competent electrician are required.
