Just watched this and I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not by calling it a lovely job!

I've never worked on one of those mantell boxes but it looks like this one clears the wall by a decent distance. I'm sure the metal they're made of is quite thick, but I would have at least tried to drill a 20mm hole in the mantell box and run the spur from the CU. It would have kept the wiring solely in the cupboard and I can't imagine it would have taken longer than it took Del to convert that 1 gang socket to surface and run all that horrible trunking.

I don't want to knock Del because he's a nice bloke and he's putting his work out there, but I think this one is a bit of a crap job and not his finest.
I agree it would have been my first choice to go to the cu but I've not came across the mantel boxes. That cu installation was a disaster
A bit of a difference between his work and Dels don't you think.
Wonder if he will be as experienced as Del is in 40 years time.
Do you listen to the electricians podcast? You got a mention from DS regarding busbars, I think it was last week.

I only recently found it but find it very entertaining. I would recommend the one titled something like electricians are the worst.

No ? Both to the podcast and the mention.
I'm not actually surprised I got a mention, though, lol

Yeah, it looked rough. Those bushings at the top were where the original circuit cables come in via conduit. I'm sure you know that box would have had a skeleton board with rewireable 3036 fuses in it originally, but someone has replaced it with a modern metal CU so it looks a bit weird with all that basic insulation being outside the CU and the circuit CPCs going into a separate MET.

But the whole lot is still inside a big metal box with a closeable door, so in terms of regs, I guess it's technically ok? It just looks like a massive pile of s*** when you open the door! If I'd done that CU I personally would rather have put something at the top to contain the original circuit cables and extend them into the new CU neatly, but Del wasn't there to do that :)

I think DEL was nervous about touching the consumer unit , didn't want to take any responsabilty for that monstrosity and being the 'last person to touch it;

It would have been much neater and better for that CU to be mounted flush to the cable entry's.

I assumed that was the case but it looked like the door had been removed. I haven't seen anything like that around here in sunny Norfolk, it's mostly wylex boards.

Although his work can be a bit rough it's much better than the people before on a lot of these and it's the dives he ends up in that I find entertaining.

It would be a shame to let the thread go cold when there's more beauty's like this! See if you can spot why he can't test the RCD (before reading the comments!)

I didn't see him fix any faults. Saw him find a fault (high zs) and seemingly be massively confused by it. Also saw him turning circuits back on while leaving unterminated wires hanging out of a socket (again)

Well that was painful to watch.

Good grief. I'm afraid that one's tipped the balance. I still like him, but that was more than a bit scary!
1 - 700ohms Zs on a TNS final circuit? Surely straight back to the board to check Ze at that point!
2 - Those RCD tests - priceless! We all have our moments but surely after both of them don't trip, a quick sanity check is in order! Even my daughter saw the issue.

Indeed. He seems to just bumble through things sometimes, with no methodical approach.

I think at one point he get a decent ZS on another circuit, so that points to an issue on the one he's working on.
Who needs a low zs anyway, there's an RCD on the circuit... that'll protect you, apart from he left the job thinking neither of the rcd s was working !!

Oh he can he IS DELROY THE SPARK Cushtie or should that be DELBOY THE SPARK, YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE RODDERS????

is he a member of any cps? Why do they not dump him when his antics are on YouTube? Energising bare ends? Really?
Yep, he's in NICEIC, and can be looked up. I thought I recognised some of his outdoor shots, it seems that 20 years ago I used to live a couple of streets away from his registered address in E10, the promised land of Leyton.
It’s like they’re only interested in his member fee and not ensuring his competency at all…
I can't possibly imagine how you formed such a view.

When your brain is fried you dont think logically, if he would of stepped back and thought about it, he may have realised he was on the wrong side of the RCD terminals.

With that Zs I would have carried a Ze to check all good there.
At the start of the video he said "When the fault was there it was tripping, now the fault is cured it's not tripping that don't make sense"
He's right, though it doesn't
Probably so. But surely you don't think that video shows him in a good light??
He's lucky to have any light at all.

He's registered as a contractor as well so that's a nice healthy fee he's paying NICEIC, his rates are up to £200 hr his lowest rate is £100 hr
Imagine being a customer that has some knowledge, watching him fumbling around like he's just had a good old session on some herbal medication, and it's cost you £500 for the privilege.
