anyone got an apprentice on minimum wage 2.60hr?
ive just taken one on and need some help, now how do i sort out his tax and NI as he is due a wage on the 9th.
do i have to register him with any one?
obviously i need to amend my insurance.
do i need to supply him with PPE and uniform.
what about holidays how many and do i have to pay him?
and one more i can think of , contracts what do i put in one...
any other things i need to know?
thanks guys help much appreciated.

Have you not taken him on via a college? They will be able to guide you as far as the rates and holidays etc go. As far as PPE, if you're an employer then his health and safety become your responsibility.

I would contact HMRC, the main tax bit can be a bit of a pain but the NIC (NI Contributions) are very helpful. It would be easier if he registered for self assessment then you just give him a lump sum and a bit of an NI contribution, not sure fully as he's on minimum wage so he will be entitled to a few benefits. You'd be better off speaking to an accountant on this sort of thing.

You must provide him with PPE, basic requirement for the job, it's qualifies as VAT free. As he's on minimum I would look at providing him with some basic uniform, nothing fancy, a couple of pair of work trousers, polo shirts etc so he doesn't look a bag of spanners when he turns up at a customers house. Corporate identity and all that. I got a load of plain polo shirts from sports direct for £3.50 each.

As for holidays, totally up to you but they must be in line with working time regulations, why not start a 21 days and add him a day every so often as a reward?

No doubt others will have good contacts they could show you.

speak to an accountant...!!

my accountant deals with all the NI and PAYE stuff.. also issue pay slips and sorts out the HMRC paperwork...!!

chances are he wont need to pay any Tax as he is on apprentice wages..!

I think you were brave and somewhat naive to take an apprentice on without getting all this sorted beforehand mate. It is a whole new ballgame once you are responsible for someone else besides yourself. You need to speak to all of the above... accountant, college and HMRC. If there is a business enterprise organisation in your area, approach them too... there may be some grants available.

Incidentally, if you are paying to train him and spending money on a proper apprenticeship, then I can see the need for a low wage. If, on the other hand, he is just a pair of hands who you are teaching the ropes, then £2.60 is just not on imo.

my apprentice started life in september on 4 an hour.... i told him for every module he passed i will increase his pay.

he just ended the first year on 7 an hour...

by end of course i expect him to be on 10.50 an hour as a newly qualified spark!

Go to the HMRC website and download the free software that does all the p11 forms etc

Use it to fill out all the paperwork- all you do is enter the pay and the tax code and it does all the rest.

You can pay £140 per week now before you have to start paying NI or TAX for an employee

Register online with HMRC and they will give you a PAYE number, and tell you his tax code.

It's not rocket science and once it's set up its straight forward- you need to do it weekly and keep an eye on it.
