Practising Electrician (Qualified - Domestic or Commercial etc)
Hi all.

I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction, i am doing some work under a Qualified electrician as i was hoping he would sign it off for me to get the ball rolling to get registered on a competent bodies scheme, I've been working with the electrician for over a year off and on while i was at collage doing my 2365 level 3 and have learned a lot from him but i was offered a job that am confident i can do, and the electrician has come a couple of times to inspect and has said its all going well and has given me pointers now the job is almost complete he is going to come and do all the testing with me but if he does sign off the work as a Qualified supervisor for me do i need to get business registered or something as that's the part i'm unsure about.

It's the first job i have done on my own all the other work has been with qualified electricians so i didn't have to think about this side of the job.

Any help greatly appreciated.
regards
Deano

Hi Deano, I do very little Domestic work so it might be worth waiting for a member who does domestic but reading your post I would say if you're trying to become a scheme member then you could use this job as an example with a couple of others, so test it yourself and keep all the certs then book an assessment with whichever scheme you want to go with.
Also if you are doing your own work then make sure you contact hmrc and get all relevant insurances in place, not forgetting business use if you are using your car.
There is probably loads I've missed but I'm sure one of the members will be along shortly.
i am rushing to get off so if I have misread your question then apologies.

Its fine getting it signed off by your mate the QS. it will also pay for you to keep the certs or duplicate the test readings you get onto the generic IET forms. The schemes know what goes on with the first assessments, its chicken and the eggs . cant join unless you have a notifiable job to show, but cant do a job as not in a scheme. you have a 28 or is it 30 days to notify the job in anycase so if your assessment is the 30th date the test certificate the 28th.. as the job is not technically complete until you have done the certificate!! believe it or not the schemes will fall over themselves to get you in... if you look on the niceic website they give you all the docs you need to join the DI scheme. whether you register self employed or as a ltd company is down to you and your accountant but insurance is required by the schemes.
